Detransition Narratives Trouble the Simple Attribution of Madness in Transantagonistic Contexts: A Qualitative Analysis of 16 Canadians' Experiences
Cult Med Psychiatry. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1007/s11013-023-09838-0. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmerging evidence suggests that transgender individuals are more likely than cisgender peers to receive a diagnosis with a primary mental disorder. Attributions of madness, though, may serve the social function of dismissing and discrediting transgender individual's self-perceptions. The narratives of individuals who stop or reverse an initial gender transition who also identify as living with mental health conditions can sometimes amplify these socio-political discourses about transgender people. Through a critical mental heal...

CONCLUSION: In this study, we had observed the usage and types of anti-psychotic drugs to control and minimize the different psychotic symptoms among the OPD patients. Maximum antipsychotics studied were cost-effective and cheaper in Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) as compared to Intas, Torrent, Sun, Linux, Cipla, Abbott, Alkem, and Sanofi.PMID:37736235 | PMC:PMC10510641 | DOI:10.4103/indianjpsychiatry.indianjpsychiatry_428_23

A cross-sectional study of opinion about mental illness among undergraduate medical students with and without exposure to the psychiatry clinical rotation/postings during their undergraduate training
CONCLUSION: Opinions can change based on one's experiences. A positive opinion toward mental illness was seen across medical undergraduate students who had completed psychiatry clinical postings in our study. The study provides valuable insights across various domains or areas wherein a teacher can focus and adjust the teaching methodologies accordingly. In the long run, it might have a positive influence on medical students to understand mental disorders, diagnose them, and manage patients with mental illness.PMID:37736224 | PMC:PMC10510633 | DOI:10.4103/indianjpsychiatry.indianjpsychiatry_87_23

Telehealth as an Effective Care Delivery Method During the COVID-19 Pandemic for the Rhode Island Behavioral Health Population
This study investigated (1) if telehealth allowed for patients who seek mental health services to maintain visit frequency and (2) if subpopulations were less likely to utilize telehealth. We used descriptive statistics to analyze the change in total number of visits, in-person visits from pre-waiver to post-waiver, and a multivariate linear regression to identify relationships between demographics and telehealth utilization. Participants were able to maintain the frequency of visits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Race/ethnicity, age, gender, employment status, and housing status were all statistically significant predictor...

A Visual Analog Scale for Self-Reported Quality of Life: A Comparison of VAS and QoL-AD in Older Adults
CONCLUSIONS: Results indicated strong construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability of the VAS QoL-AD in people without dementia. These results warrant further research into the development of a dementia-specific, self-reported VAS QoL scale for PWD.PMID:37738287 | DOI:10.1097/WAD.0000000000000581

Virtual Assessment as a Way to Reduce Help-seeking Barriers in Older Adults With Subjective Cognitive Decline
Alzheimer Dis Assoc Disord. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1097/WAD.0000000000000582. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSubjective cognitive decline (SCD), a potential early marker for neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer's disease, is common among older adults. Although it is often regarded as a personal health concern, most individuals with SCD do not seek help from a health care professional. Help-seeking (HS) is a complex, individualized process with significant life-course implications, and older adults often face several barriers to HS across personal, socioeconomic, and cultural domains. The pandemic exacerbated these barr...

Barriers and enablers to access and utilization of mental health care services across Southeast Asia: A preliminary scoping review
AbstractWhile the importance of mental health and its impact on overall health and well-being has been widely recognized, there continue to be ongoing barriers to accessing mental health services. This is particularly poignant in countries in Southeast Asia (SEA) where there may be further stigma in accessing mental health services. As no reviews have been undertaken on this topic, this review aims to outline the barriers and enablers to access and utilization of mental health care services in SEA. Searches were undertaken in commercially produced and gray literature sources. Two independent reviewers screened the results....

Blunted glucocorticoid responsiveness to stress causes behavioral and biological alterations that lead to posttraumatic stress disorder vulnerability
Understanding why only a subset of trauma-exposed individuals develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is critical for advancing clinical strategies. A few behavioral (deficits in fear extinction) and biological (blunted glucocorticoid levels, small hippocampal size, and rapid-eye movement sleep (REMS) disturbances) traits have been identified as potential vulnerability factors. However, whether and to what extent these traits are interrelated and whether one of them could causally engender the others are not known.

Approaching “highly sensitive person” as a cultural concept of distress: a case-study using the cultural formulation interview in patients with bipolar disorder
ConclusionBy applying a person-centered perspective, CFI was used for the conceptualization of a cultural notion as a CCD (i.e., HSP in our study). Moreover, the cases highlight the complexity of illness insight in BD as a medical phenomenon when patients’ illness perspectives are taken into consideration. Future studies need to further examine the clinical relevance of the CFI in the management of BD.

Costs of Coordinated Specialty Care for First-Episode Psychosis: A Microcosting Analysis
In this study, the authors measured and described the costs of coordinated specialty care (CSC) for first-episode psychosis in Ohio. A microcosting tool was used to estimate personnel and nonpersonnel costs of service delivery at seven CSC programs. Average annual cost per participant (N=511 participants) was estimated as $17,810 (95% CI=$9,141-$26,479). On average, 61% (95% CI=53%-69%) of annual program costs were nonbillable. Key cost drivers included facility costs, administrative tasks, and social services. Novel financing models may redress reimbursement gaps incurred by CSC programs.PMID:37731346 | DOI:10.1176/appi.ps.20230241

Support From Intermediary Organizations for Evidence-Based Practices in Behavioral Health Care
Psychiatr Serv. 2023 Sep 21:appips20230139. doi: 10.1176/appi.ps.20230139. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIntermediary and purveyor organizations play a key role in disseminating and implementing evidence-based behavioral health best practices (EBPs). The authors provide a case example to describe how state-funded intermediaries can enhance the implementation and sustainment of EBP. Benefits of using state-funded intermediaries include the ability to collaborate with state entities to address barriers to and then incentivize best practices, access to resources to develop a robust infrastructure to support EBP training and i...
