Organic or Inorganic Zinc for Laying Hens? A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of the Effects of Zinc Sources on Laying Performance, Egg Quality, and Zinc Excretion
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03861-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe higher availability of zinc (Zn) from organic than inorganic sources is already established, but more assertive and cost-friendly protocols on the total replacement of inorganic with organic Zn sources for laying hens still need to be developed. Because some discrepancy in the effects of this replacement in laying hen diets is noticeable in the literature, the objective of this meta-analysis was to properly quantify the effect size of total replacing inorganic Zn with organic Zn in the diet of laying hens on their laying pe...

Performance of volatile fatty acids production from food waste at the presence of alkyl ethoxy polyglycosides and sodium dodecyl sulfate
This study investigated the performance of VFAs production from food waste at the presence of alkyl ethoxy polyglycosides (AEG) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The highest yield of VFAs was obtained at 0.1 g AEG/g TS (14.53 g COD/L), which increased by 25.80% than the Blank. But inhibited phenomenon was observed at other reactors with relatively low yield and delayed fermentation time. The inhibition of lactate's production and bioconversion delayed the fermentation time, and SDS has changed the acidogenic fermentation type from lactate-butyrate fermentation to acetate fermentation. In addition, more organic matter disso...

Microplastics in wastewater treatment plants and their contributions to surface water and farmland pollution in China
This study examines the presence of MPs in sewage and sludge in Shenzhen WWTPs and estimates the annual mass loading of MPs from WWTPs to surface water and farmland soil in China. According to our results, for Shenzhen, the annual contribution of MPs from WWTPs (which was obtained by multiplying the annual treated sewage volume by the estimated MP density in the treated sewage) to surface water could be 70.6-302 tons. With a normalized extrapolation model of population density, the contribution of national urban WWTPs to MPs in surface water was estimated to be 734 -3.10 × 103 tons/year, of which 220-950 tons/year entered...

Singlet oxygen in the removal of organic pollutants: An updated review on the degradation pathways based on mass spectrometry and DFT calculations
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 19:140203. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140203. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe degradation of pollutants by a non-radical pathway involving singlet oxygen (1O2) is highly relevant in advanced oxidation processes. Photosensitizers, modified photocatalysts, and activated persulfates can generate highly selective 1O2 in the medium. The selective reaction of 1O2 with organic pollutants results in the evolution of different intermediate products. While these products can be identified using mass spectrometry (MS) techniques, predicting a proper degradation mechanism in a 1O2-based process is still ch...

Building Block-inspired Hybrid Perovskite Derivatives for Ferroelectric Channel Layers with Gate-Tunable Memory Behavior
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Sep 21:e202309416. doi: 10.1002/anie.202309416. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFerroelectric photovoltaics driven by spontaneous polarization (Ps) holds a promise for creating the next-generation optoelectronics, spintronics and non-volatile memories. However, photoactive ferroelectrics are quite scarce in single homogeneous phase, owing to the severe Ps fatigue caused by leakage current of photoexcited carriers. Here, through combining inorganic and organic components as building blocks, we constructed a series of ferroelectric semiconductors of 2D hybrid perovskites, (HA)2(MA)n-1PbnBr3n+1 (n =...
