Superior detection rate of plasma cell FISH using FACS-FISH
CONCLUSIONS: Fluorescence-activated cell sorting-FISH is an efficient PC purification strategy that affords significant improvement in diagnostic yield and decreases workflow requirements in comparison with cIg-FISH.PMID:37658775 | DOI:10.1093/ajcp/aqad108

Potential Role of Selenium in Modifying the Effect of Maternal Methylmercury Exposure on Child Neurodevelopment-A Review
Neurotoxicology. 2023 Aug 31:S0161-813X(23)00105-5. doi: 10.1016/j.neuro.2023.08.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSelenium (Se) is an essential trace element for normal neurodevelopment. It is incorporated into multiple selenoenzymes which have roles in the brain and neurological function, the synthesis of thyroid hormones, the antioxidant defense system, DNA synthesis, and reproduction. Fish is a source of both Se and neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). Selenium is known to ameliorate the effects of MeHg in experimental animals, but studies in children exposed to both Se and MeHg through prenatal fish consumption have been...

Meiotic segregation and post-meiotic drive of the Festuca pratensis B chromosome
Chromosome Res. 2023 Sep 2;31(3):26. doi: 10.1007/s10577-023-09728-6.ABSTRACTIn many species, the transmission of B chromosomes (Bs) does not follow the Mendelian laws of equal segregation and independent assortment. This deviation results in transmission rates of Bs higher than 0.5, a process known as "chromosome drive". Here, we studied the behavior of the 103 Mbp-large B chromosome of Festuca pratensis during all meiotic and mitotic stages of microsporogenesis. Mostly, the B chromosome of F. pratensis segregates during meiosis like standard A chromosomes (As). In some cases, the B passes through meiosis in a non-Mendeli...

Long-chain pentraxin 3 possesses agglutination activity and plays a role in host defense against bacterial infection in Oreochromis niloticus
In conclusion, our research demonstrates that OnPTX3 has bacterial binding and agglutination activities, enhances phagocytosis, and regulates inflammation. It plays a crucial role in the defense of Nile tilapia against pathogenic bacteria, providing valuable insights for the prevention and control of aquatic diseases in the future.PMID:37657531 | DOI:10.1016/j.dci.2023.105053

Microbial oil, alone or paired with β-glucans, can control hypercholesterolemia in a zebrafish model
Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Cell Biol Lipids. 2023 Aug 30:159383. doi: 10.1016/j.bbalip.2023.159383. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDyslipidemia is often associated with unhealthy dietary habits, and many mammalian studies have explored the mode of action of certain bioactive compounds such as β-glucans and n-3 PUFAs to understand their potential to normalize the lipid metabolism. There are only a few investigations of their combined effect on hypercholesterolemia by adopting omics approaches. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) was used as a model organism to reveal the efficacy of Schizochytrium oil and β-glucans (from Euglena gracili...

Ups and downs of infections with the broad fish tapeworm Dibothriocephalus latus in Europe (Part II) and Asia from 1900 to 2020
Adv Parasitol. 2023;122:1-69. doi: 10.1016/bs.apar.2023.05.001. Epub 2023 Jun 17.ABSTRACTThe broad fish tapeworm, Dibothriocephalus latus (Diphyllobothriidea), is the most important causative agent of diphyllobothriosis, a fish-borne zoonosis, in Europe. Part I of this review focused on the occurrence of D. latus in northwestern and central Europe, particularly in Fennoscandia, the Baltic, the Alpine lakes and Danube River regions during 1900-2020. Part II summarises data on D. latus from the European and Asian parts of Russia and from Asian countries. The tapeworm has occurred throughout Russia, with the most important fo...
