The Top 10 Health Chatbots
This study from March 2023 reports how an app developed to help patients’ bowel preparation can increase compliance and thus, the number of successful colonoscopies. In some cases, health chatbots are also able to connect patients with clinicians for diagnosis or treatment, but that is one step further down the line. The general idea is that in the future, these talking or texting smart algorithms might become the first contact point for primary care. Patients will not get in touch with physicians or nurses or any medical professional with every one of their health questions but will turn to chatbots first. If th...

Determining efficacy of dynamic multimedia bowel preparation instructions versus standard instructions on adenoma detection and patient reported measures (DIGICLEAN trial): a study protocol for a multicentre, colonoscopist-blinded, randomised controlled trial
BMJ Open. 2023 Jul 21;13(7):e073843. doi: 10.1136/bmjopen-2023-073843.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Colonoscopy plays important roles in bowel cancer screening and treatment. Poor bowel preparation occurs in 20-25% of colonoscopies. This negatively impacts adenoma and sessile serrated lesion detection rates, procedural time, requirement for repeat colonoscopies, healthcare costs and likelihood of patient withdrawal from screening programmes. It is unclear whether a combination of multimedia modalities can improve bowel preparation quality, adenoma detection rates and patient-reported measures in those undergoing colonoscopy assess...

Dietary patterns associated with colorectal cancer risk in the Malaysian population: a case-control study with exploratory factor and regression analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The processed diet pattern attributed to a diet high in confectionaries and fast foods was associated with an increased risk of CRC in the Malaysian population. In order to give prevention measures through lifestyle change, more research could be done on the effect of food patterns on faecal microbiota associated with CRC.PMID:37468880 | DOI:10.1186/s12889-023-16283-6

Adherence to Mediterranean diet and its association with multiple colonic polyps of unknown origin: a case-control study
CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that environmental factors play a role in the pathogenesis of this phenotype.PMID:37426188 | PMC:PMC10324649 | DOI:10.3389/fnut.2023.1186808

Fight Aging! Newsletter, June 12th 2023
In this study, we investigated the effect of NXP032 on neurovascular stabilization through the changes of PECAM-1, PDGFR-β, ZO-1, laminin, and glial cells involved in maintaining the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in aged mice. NXP032 was orally administered daily for 8 weeks. Compared to young mice and NXP032-treated mice, 20-month-old mice displayed cognitive impairments in Y-maze and passive avoidance tests. NXP032 treatment contributed to reducing the BBB damage by attenuating the fragmentation of microvessels and reducing PDGFR-β, ZO-1, and laminin expression, thereby mitigating astrocytes and microglia ...

Irritable bowel syndrome in the Russian Federation: results of the ROMERUS multicenter observational study
CONCLUSION: IBS patients in the Russian Federation were characterized. The diagnosis of IBS, established following the Rome IV criteria, is confirmed by the results of a standard examination in 96.3% of patients. The Rome IV criteria for the IBS diagnosis make it possible to establish a diagnosis with a probability of 94.7%. For 6 months of follow-up, there was a clinical improvement with a decrease in the severity of symptoms and a QoL improvement.PMID:37167114 | DOI:10.26442/00403660.2023.01.202043

Colorectal Cancer Screening in the Middle East: What, Why, Who, When, and How?
Am Soc Clin Oncol Educ Book. 2023 May;43:e390520. doi: 10.1200/EDBK_390520.ABSTRACTThe incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in the Middle East is increasing, especially among those younger than 50 years. Risk factors including obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and dietary changes are associated with the epidemiologic shift and are a result of socioeconomic changes happening in the region. Worldwide, CRC screening is associated with decreased incidence and mortality of CRC, but screening uptake is still low in the Middle East because of cultural barriers and lack of awareness; in addition, most countries do not have national sc...

Association of distinct microbial signatures with premalignant colorectal adenomas
Cell Host Microbe. 2023 Apr 27:S1931-3128(23)00158-0. doi: 10.1016/j.chom.2023.04.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEnvironmental exposures are a major risk factor for developing colorectal cancer, and the gut microbiome may serve as an integrator of such environmental risk. To study the microbiome associated with premalignant colon lesions, such as tubular adenomas (TAs) and sessile serrated adenomas (SSAs), we profiled stool samples from 971 participants undergoing colonoscopy and paired these data with dietary and medication history. The microbial signatures associated with either SSA or TA are distinct. SSA associates...
