Vitamin D supplementation improves the therapeutic effect of mometasone on allergic rhinitis
This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) using mometasone. A total of 140 patients with moderate and severe AR treated at our hospital between January 2017 and August 2020 were recruited as subjects for this study. The patients were randomly divided into control and experimental groups, with 70 patients in each group. Mometasone nasal spray was used in both groups, and vitamin D was administered to the experimental group for four weeks. The total nasal symptom scores (TNSS) and rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ) wer...

Vitamin D: determinants of status, indications for testing and knowledge in a convenience sample of Irish adults
Br J Nutr. 2023 Oct 14;130(7):1144-1154. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523000168. Epub 2023 Feb 9.ABSTRACTVitamin D deficiency is common in Irish adults, though there is limited research on its determinants, knowledge of vitamin D or indications for testing. We aimed to explore the determinants of vitamin D status in adults and examine knowledge and reasons for testing. The study population comprised adults who had serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D tested by general practitioners request at a Dublin Hospital in 2020. Questionnaires detailing dietary intake, sun exposure, ethnicity, biophysical factors and vitamin D knowledge were sent to a...

Assessment of the oxidative status in mother-child couples from Seville (Spain): A prospective cohort study
Free Radic Biol Med. 2023 Aug 18;207:308-319. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2023.08.017. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPregnancy requires a high demand of energy, which leads to an increase of oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to assess the oxidative status in 200 couples of pregnant women-newborns at the time of delivery, for the first time, who gave birth in two University Hospitals from the province of Seville. Recruited women filled an epidemiological questionnaire with their demographic characteristics and dietary habits during pregnancy. At the time of delivery, both maternal and cord blood samples were coll...

The concept and practical management of frailty in neurology
Rev Neurol. 2023 May 16;76(10):327-336. doi: 10.33588/rn.7610.2023124.ABSTRACTFrailty is a clinical situation of decreased homeostatic reserve that, after a minor trigger (acute illness, fall, taking a drug...) increases the risk of an adverse event such as hospital admission, institutionalization, functional and/or cognitive decline, death, etc. Frailty can be understood as physical frailty, Fried's phenotype, a true geriatric syndrome that can be reversible by avoiding its progression to more advanced stages of irreversibility and dependence, and Rockwood's frailty due to accumulation of deficits, as a continuum of healt...

The association between maternal nutrient intake during pregnancy and the risk of sporadic unilateral retinoblastoma among offspring
Cancer Epidemiol. 2023 May 9;85:102376. doi: 10.1016/j.canep.2023.102376. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrevious studies have associated maternal diet during pregnancy with the development of sporadic unilateral retinoblastoma (RB), but few studies have focused on the role of individual nutrients. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between maternal nutrient intake during pregnancy and the development of sporadic unilateral RB in the offspring. A modified food frequency questionnaire, with additional questions on supplement use, was completed via a phone interview. Cases were recruited from hospitals an...
