Encapsulation of Dicranopteris linearis extract using cellulose microparticles for antiulcer medication
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 7:126795. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126795. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDicranopteris linearis (DL) is a fern in the Gleicheniaceae family, locally known as resam by the Malay community. It has numerous pharmacological benefits, with antiulcer and gastroprotective properties. Peptic ulcer is a chronic and recurring disease that significantly impacts morbidity and mortality, affecting nearly 20 % of the world's population. Despite the effectiveness of peptic ulcer drugs, there is no perfect treatment for the ailment. Encapsulation is an advanced technique that can treat peptic ulcers by in...

Electrolyte imbalance causes suppression of NK and T cell effector function in malignant ascites
CONCLUSION: Our data suggest a novel electrolyte-based mechanism of immunosuppression in malignant ascites of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. We show for the first time that the immunosuppression of NK cytotoxicity in coculture assays is correlated to patient poor survival. Therapeutic application of sodium channel inhibitors may provide new means for restoring immune cell activity in ascites or similar electrolyte imbalanced environments.PMID:37684704 | DOI:10.1186/s13046-023-02798-8

Effects of intravenous sodium thiosulfate on vascular calcification in dialysis patients with end-stage renal disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Intravenous STS may slow down the progression of vascular calcification and ameliorate arterial stiffness in dialysis patients. Reliably defining the efficacy and safety of intravenous STS in attenuating the progression of vascular calcification requires a high-quality trial with a large sample size.PMID:37526956 | DOI:10.5830/CVJA-2023-020

Nephrogenic Calciphylaxis Arising After Bariatric Surgery: A Case Series
We report a case series of five bariatric patients from a single institution who developed nephrogenic calciphylaxis between 2012-2018. These patients had a history of bariatric surgery and at the time of calciphylaxis diagnosis, demonstrated laboratory abnormalities associated with surgery including hypercalcemia (n=3), hyperparathyroidism (n=2), hypoalbuminemia (n=5), and vitamin D deficiency (n=5), in addition to other medication exposures such as vitamin D supplementation (n=2), calcium supplementation (n=4), warfarin (n=2), and intravenous iron (n=1). Despite the multifactorial etiology of calciphylaxis and the many r...

Hemodialysis complications: focus on pruritus and vascular calcifications
Nephrol Ther. 2023 Jun 29;19(S1):6-14. doi: 10.1684/ndt.2023.26.ABSTRACTChronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP) is a frequent complication, with an estimated prevalence of 24-37% in patients treated with hemodialysis. Its pathophysiology is complex and includes four interrelated axes: accumulation of uremic toxins, peripheral neuropathy, an imbalance in the opioid receptors balance, and abnormal activation of immune cells. This symptom which is associated with impaired quality of life is underestimated by caregivers and underreported by patients. Management is not uniformly codified. It includes the use of skin...
