Factors that influence the severity of post-stroke depression.
CONCLUSION: The location of the stroke and the NIHSS score could be related to the severity of post-stroke depression. Abbreviations: NIHSS = The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale; QQL = Quality of life Scale; BDI = Beck Depression Inventory; MMSE = Mini-Mental State Examination; PSD = Post-stroke depression; MRI = Magnetic resonance imaging. Newly detected atrial fibrillation is associated with cortex-involved ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to previously known AF, newly detected AF persistent >24 h was associated with cortex-involved ischemic stroke. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT02156765, https://clinicaltrials.gov. PMID: 31403970 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Neuroimaging and Blood Biomarkers in Functional Prognosis after Stroke.
CONCLUSION: Although some biomarkers and neuroimaging techniques have potential predictive value, none of the studies were able to support its use, alone or in association, as a clinically useful functionality predictor model. All the evaluated markers were considered insufficient to predict functional prognosis at three months, when applied in the first hours after stroke. Additional studies are necessary to identify reliable predictive markers for functional prognosis after ischemic stroke. PMID: 28229841 [PubMed - in process]

Functional changes of neural circuits in stroke patients with dysphagia: a meta ‐analysis
ConclusionsThe hyperactivity of precentral gyrus is crucial in stroke patients with dysphagia and may be associated with the severity of stroke. Besides the motor areas, the Default‐Mode Network regions (DMN) and Affective Network regions (AN) circuits are also involved in dysphagia after stroke. This article is protected by copyright. Stem cell transplantation for ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, in participants with ischemic stroke, stem cell transplantation was associated with a reduced neurological impairment, but not with a better functional outcome. No obvious safety concerns were raised. However, these conclusions came mostly from small RCTs with high risk of bias, and the certainty of the evidence ranged from low to very low. More well-designed trials are needed. PMID: 31055832 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Puerarin for ischaemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: There is not enough evidence to evaluate the effect of puerarin on survival or dependency in people with ischaemic stroke. High quality and large-scale RCTs with long-term follow-up are needed to assess its efficacy. PMID: 26891451 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Dynamic derangement in amino acid profile during and after a stroke-like episode in adult-onset mitochondrial disease: a case report
ConclusionsGrowth differentiation factor-15 can be used not only for the diagnosis of mitochondrial disease, but as an indicator of its acute exacerbation. A stroke-like episode of mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes reflects a drastic derangement of multiple amino acids. The involvement of aspartic acid in the episodes should be explored in future studies.

Hemorrhagic Stroke Resulting From Venous Malformation at 20 Weeks of Pregnancy.
CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates the similarities between the perilous diagnosis of stroke and the more routine diagnosis of migraine. The case also highlights the need for caution and for a multidisciplinary treatment approach when the diagnosis of stroke is considered, particularly in the pregnant patient. PMID: 27999514 [PubMed]

Left ventricular hypertrophy diagnosed after a stroke: a case report
ConclusionsElectrocardiogram diagnosis of left ventricular hypertrophy led to the diagnosis of apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in this patient. Left ventricular hypertrophy was only evident a few days after our patient suffered a stroke. The underlying mechanisms responsible for this remain unclear. Furthermore, differential diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy should be considered in people with electrocardiogram criteria for left ventricular hypertrophy. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging is an important diagnostic tool in identifying causes of left ventricular hypertrophy. Family screening should be recomm...

Bilateral medial medullary stroke: A rare stroke syndrome masquerading as myasthenia crisis in a young diabetic lady
J R Coll Physicians Edinb. 2022 Mar;52(1):30-33. doi: 10.1177/14782715221088914.ABSTRACTBilateral medial medullary stroke is a rare stroke syndrome. The clinical presentation of bilateral medial medullary stroke is heterogenous and often overlaps with other non-stroke neurology emergencies such as Guillain-Barrésyndrome, myasthenic crisis and acute vestibular syndrome, leading to misdiagnosis. We wish to present a case of a young lady with type 1 diabetes mellitus, who had presented with subacute neuromuscular weakness which was erroneously treated as myasthenic crisis. Her case was subsequently diagnosed as bilateral med...
