Is gout a risk equivalent to diabetes for stroke and myocardial infarction? A retrospective claims database study
Gout is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but associations with specific cardiovascular outcomes, myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke are unclear. Our objective in the present study was to assess wh...

Bilateral vertebral artery occlusion without stroke secondary to giant cell arteritis.
We report a case of an 84-year-old male patient with anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy secondary to giant cell arteritis, with bilateral occlusion of the vertebral arteries manifested with nonspecific neurological signs, detected during the ultrasound scan of the cervical arteries. The rarity of this case lies in the reasonably good outcome at the three-month and six-month follow-up and the absence of temporal artery involvement, despite the severe vertebral artery affection with bilateral occlusion. Gout is associated with an increased risk for incident heart failure among older adults: the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) cohort study
Gout has been associated with a higher risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke in some prior studies. Few studies have assessed the association of gout with incident heart failure (HF).

Early-onset stroke and iron-deficiency anaemia in young siblings
Rheumatology key messagesDADA2 has a highly variable phenotype and may present without overt evidence of vascular inflammation.Young-onset stroke and haematological abnormalities, especially in the presence of consanguinity, should alert the clinician to possible DADA2.Anti-TNF therapy has been shown to be effective for preventing ischaemic episodes, while HSCT remains an option for those who fail to respond to anti-TNF therapy.

An unusual case of carotidynia preceding recurrent ischemic stroke with carotid thrombosis in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus
We report the case of a woman without evidence of a lupus flare-up who presented with the unusual clinical course of ipsilateral carotidynia and recurrent ischemic stroke due to carotid thrombosis. To our knowledge, this is the first case of such an unusual manifestation in lupus and highlights distinctive challenges in the diagnosis and management of carotid artery thrombosis following carotidynia.PMID:36289010 | DOI:10.1177/09612033221135868

Association of hyperlipidaemia, inflammation and serological status and coronary heart disease among patients with rheumatoid arthritis: data from the National Veterans Health Administration
Conclusions In this predominantly older male RA cohort, there was no clear association between LDL-C and CHD, whereas higher HDL-C was inversely associated with MI and stroke. CRP and ESR were similarly associated with increase MI risk and stroke, reflecting the prominent role of inflammation in CHD risk in RA.

Colchicine may become a new cornerstone therapy for coronary artery disease: a meta ‐analysis of randomized controlled trials
AbstractPurposeColchicine is an ancient anti-inflammatory drug. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have shown that colchicine improves the prognosis of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), while other studies have reported the opposite. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relative efficacy and safety of colchicine in treating CAD.MethodsPubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched from inception to 20 October 2020 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing colchicine and placebo in patients with CAD. The primary outcomes were the primary composite outcomes of...

Cerebral artery dissection secondary to antiphospholipid syndrome: A report of two cases and a literature review.
CONCLUSIONS: The current report described two rare cases of ischemic stroke caused by CAD secondary to APS, along with a review of the literature; the patients displayed characteristic clinical manifestations, implying specific mechanisms for cerebral artery disorders secondary to APS. The risks of major cardiac events among patients with psoriatic arthritis treated with apremilast, biologics, DMARDs or corticosteroids
ConclusionIn patients with treated PsA, IRs of MI, stroke and revascularization were low for all systemic treatments evaluated. Although the number of events was small, apremilast exposure did not signal potential acute cardiovascular harm and was not associated with a material increase in the risk of these serious cardiac events.

Cardiovascular events and risk in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: Systematic literature review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis found an increased risk of stroke, MI, CVD, and hypertension in patients with SLE compared with the general population, despite substantial heterogeneity across the included studies.PMID:36547368 | DOI:10.1177/09612033221147471

The risk of cardiovascular disease in systemic sclerosis: a population-based cohort study
Conclusions These findings provide the first general population-based evidence that SSc is associated with an increased risk of developing MI, stroke and PVD. Further insight into disease mechanisms, as well as how disease subtype, organ involvement and medication use may alter these increased risks, is needed.

Hyperuricemia in systemic lupus erythematosus: is it associated with the neuropsychiatric manifestations of the disease?
Conclusions Hyperuricemia in SLE patients is independently associated with the occurrence of stroke and peripheral neuropathy. It is also independently associated with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and history of arterial thrombosis, which are the major stroke and myocardial infarction risk factors in SLE patients.
