Effects of Statin Treatment on Patients with Angina and Normal or Nearly Normal Angiograms
Statins are commonly used in patients with hypercholesterolaemia and in those with cardiovascular diseases – that is, peripheral artery disease and coronary artery disease (CAD) – for the prevention of atheromatous plaque development, progression and complications, with the aim of reducing subsequent major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), i.e. cardiac death, acute MI, stroke and heart failure.

Statin Therapy in HIGH-Risk Individuals with NORMal Coronary Arteries: The HIGH-NORM Study
CONCLUSIONS: Statin use was not associated with cardiovascular risk reduction in high-risk persons with normal or near normal coronary arteries. More individualised lipid-lowering therapy may benefit this population.PMID:34334544 | DOI:10.5551/jat.63004

Basilar dolichoectasia with intermural hematoma accompanied by cerebral microbleeds and white matter hyperintensities: A case report
Rationale: The clinical manifestations of basilar dolichoectasia (BD) are variable. The diagnosis is based on imaging measurements. Digital subtraction angiography displays only the dilated vascular lumen and lacks visualization of the arterial wall. High-resolution Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can identify intramural hematoma; therefore, it may be more suitable for the imaging evaluation of BD. However, most of the existing literature pertaining to BD lacks vascular wall assessment. Patient concerns: A 65-year-old Chinese man perceived weakness of the left upper and lower limb, double vision, dizziness, nau...

Commentary: Statins for secondary prevention after coronary artery bypass grafting: Pleiotropic effects and dementia risk
In this issue, Pan and colleagues1  present a study using population-based data from the SWEDEHEART registry to report on the impact of statins on major adverse events after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Their results demonstrate decisively that the use of statins is associated with a decreased risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for new revascularization or angiography, and, interestingly, dementia. These effects were observed in both men and women, and in those younger than and older than 75 years of age, and were not dependent on whether patients wer...

Design, methods and baseline characteristics of the Beijing Hospital Atherosclerosis Study: a prospective dynamic cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: This study has successfully initiated an investigation into the roles of new biosignatures in predicting CAD among Chinese Han patients undergoing CAG. To the best of our knowledge, this cohort is the first study systematically focusing on the association of lifestyle biomarkers and biological age with CAD risk. Findings from this study will provide biomarkers to discriminate the presence of CAD and to predict subsequent cardiovascular events.PMID:35965802 | PMC:PMC9372652 | DOI:10.21037/atm-22-2834
