Stroke in centenarians
ConclusionCentenarians with stroke are from a cardiovascular standpoint healthier than their younger counterparts. Yet, strokes in centenarians are more severe and associated with very high mortality. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2013; ●●: ●●–●●.

Morale in very old people who have had a stroke
Abstract: Stroke incidence increases with age and may impact on morale. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of stroke among individuals aged 85 years or older in Northern Sweden and Western Finland and to evaluate factors associated with morale among those who have had a stroke compared with those without a stroke history. This population-based, cross-sectional study included 708 individuals (504 women and 204 men) aged 85 years and older (range 85–107). The study was conducted through structured interviews during home visits and from reviews of medical records, where demographic data and health-relat...

Depression after minor stroke: the association with disability and quality of life – a 1‐year follow‐up study
ConclusionsPost‐stroke depression was independently associated with disability and poor QoL at 1 year after first‐ever minor ischemic stroke. Recovery from PSD decreased but did not eliminate the adverse impacts of PSD on outcomes of minor stroke.

Effect of oral cilostazol on acute neurological deterioration and outcome of noncardioembolic minor stroke
Conclusion In noncardioembolic stroke, combined antithrombotic therapy with early oral cilostazol in the acute phase appears to be associated with a good outcome in patients with progressive stroke.

World Stroke Day in Taiwan: Raising Public Awareness of Stroke
Conclusion When preparing for future WSD campaigns, the organizing committee must perform a detailed assessment to understand target population requirements and design more appropriate events. For promoting the WSD campaigns, proficient advertising is necessary for attracting attendees and increasing their willingness to participate.

Post-stroke Dementia: Epidemiology, Mechanisms and Management
Publication date: Available online 10 August 2017 Source:International Journal of Gerontology Author(s): Gwo-Chi Hu, Yi-Min Chen Post-stroke dementia (PSD) is a clinical entity that encompasses all types of dementia following an index stroke, which may affect up to one third of stroke survivors. Unlike physical disability after stroke, cognitive function usually worsens over time and are often overlooked with detrimental impacts on the quality of life of survivors. The risk factors for post-stroke dementia are multifactorial and includes genetic predisposition, demographic factors (like older age and lower education statu...

Premorbid physical activity is modestly associated with gait independence after a stroke: an exploratory study
ConclusionsPremorbid physical activity is associated with gait independence after a stroke, but this association is not as strong as those of age or history of stroke.

Childhood Misfortune and Late-Life Stroke Incidence, 2004-2014.
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Accumulated childhood misfortune and adolescent depression heighten the risk of stroke in later life, but the influence is remediable through adult wealth. Reducing poverty in later life may decrease stroke incidence for persons exposed to negative childhood exposures. PMID: 32267501 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stringent public health measures during COVID-19 across ischemic stroke care systems: the potential impact of patient perceptions on health care-seeking behaviors
AbstractDecreases in acute stroke presentations have been reported during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic surges. A recent study by Bojti et al. (GeroScience. 2021;43:2231 –2248) sought to understand the relationship of public health mandates in Hungary as they were implemented with acute ischemic stroke admissions and interventions during two separate COVID-19 waves. We sought to perform a similar analysis of changes in ischemic stroke care at two distinct medical institutions in the USA. Two separate institutions and systems of ischemic stroke care were evaluated through a regional comprehensive stroke...

Effect on anxiety and depression of a multifactorial risk factor intervention program after stroke and TIA: a randomized controlled trial.
Conclusion: A structured, multidisciplinary, multifactorial risk factor program including vascular risk factor management may be associated with reduced HADS scores and a lower prevalence of depressive symptoms one year after stroke. PMID: 23957255 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Natural history, predictors and associated outcomes of anxiety up to 10 years after stroke: the South London Stroke Register
Conclusions: anxiety is a frequent problem affecting stroke survivors in the long term. Clinicians should pay attention to patients at risk of anxiety since it is associated with lower QoL and depression.

Pre‐stroke dementia does not affect the post‐acute care functional outcome of old patients with ischemic stroke
ConclusionsThe present findings suggest that a diagnosis of pre‐stroke dementia is associated with lower FIM scores at admission and discharge in patients with ischemic stroke. Yet, daily motor FIM gains were similar in PSD and non‐PSD patients, suggesting that these patients should not be deprived of a post‐acute rehabilitation, based on a diagnosis of dementia before stroke onset. Risk Factors for In-Hospital Mortality among Ischemic Stroke Patients in Southern Taiwan
Conclusion Nearly 30% of in-hospital mortality is associated with preventable factors. The prognosis of acute stroke can be improved by increased focus on reducing serious complications after stroke, particularly on the prevention of infection, heart disease, and increased intracranial pressure.
