Serum tenascin-C predicts severity and outcome of acute intracerebral hemorrhage.
CONCLUSIONS: An increase in serum tenascin-C level is associated with an adverse outcome in ICH patients, supporting the potential role of serum tenascin-C as a prognostic biomarker for hemorrhagic stroke. PMID: 29499198 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Serum cyclophilin A concentrations and prognosis of acute intracerebral hemorrhage.
CONCLUSIONS: Increasted serum cyclophilin A concentrations are highly associated with stroke severity and prognosis after hemorrhagic stroke. PMID: 30077639 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Characterization of PLAC ® tests in the quantization of lipoprotein associated phospholipase A2 for assessment of cardiovascular diseases.
CONCLUSIONS: Both PLAC® mass and PLAC® activity tests are effective but the CHAPS modified PLAC® mass test has no or less utility in the risk assessment of CVD. The ratio of Lp-PLA2 by either PLAC® mass or PLAC® activity over ApoA1 or (Apo A1 + Apo B) synergistically enhance the risk assessment power for ischemic stroke. Recent advances in the development of neuroprotective agents and therapeutic targets in the treatment of cerebral ischemia.
This article reviews current research and developments regarding small molecular compounds, including natural products and newly synthesized compounds that have neuroprotective effects and potential molecular targets for the recovery of post-ischemic stroke neural function that have been identified through lab investigations conducted during the last five years. Although pre-clinical studies of these compounds may not be immediately successful, current findings suggest that these therapeutic targets and neuroprotective agents are promising. LOX-1 and atherosclerotic-related diseases.
Abstract Lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1), a scavenger receptor of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) found in various cells, plays a crucial role in the formation and progression of atherosclerotic plaques. Animal studies have suggested that LOX-1 mediates the balance between internalization and degeneration of endothelial cells, thereby contributing to various steps in the atherosclerotic process, from initiation to plaque rupture. Under pathological conditions, the extracellular domain of membrane bound LOX-1 can be largely proteolytically cleaved into a soluble form (sLOX-...

Circulating Klotho is linked to prognosis of acute intracerebral hemorrhage.
CONCLUSIONS: Decreased plasma Klotho concentrations were associated with increasing severity and poor prognosis significantly, indicating the prognostic role of plasma Klotho in intracerebral hemorrhage. PMID: 31344366 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Protective effects of hederagenic acid on PC12 cells against the OGD/R-induced apoptosis via activating Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway
AbstractCerebral ischemic stroke is a severe cause of disability and death among people worldwide. The occlusion of cerebral blood flow has resulted in the infarction due to the oxygen and glucose deprivation. Though timely reperfusion can reduce the infarct size, the oxidative stress triggered in ischemia and reperfusion will induce apoptosis of neurons in penumbra. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a transcription factor regulating the expression of antioxidant enzymes through binding to antioxidant response elements (ARE). The activation of Nrf2/ARE pathway can protect neurons against oxidative stres...

Impact of serum omentin-1 concentrations on functional outcome among acute intracerebral hemorrhage patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Lower serum omentin-1 concentrations are closely associated with poor functional outcome after hemorrhagic stroke, substantializing serum omentin-1 as a potential prognostic biomarker for acute intracerebral hemorrhage. PMID: 31991129 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Molecules, Vol. 26, Pages 811: Potential Role of Melatonin as an Adjuvant for Atherosclerotic Carotid Arterial Stenosis
Changwei Liu Carotid artery stenosis (CAS) is an atherosclerotic disease characterized by a narrowing of the artery lumen and a high risk of ischemic stroke. Risk factors of atherosclerosis, including smoking, hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, aging, and disrupted circadian rhythm, may potentiate atherosclerosis in the carotid artery and further reduce the arterial lumen. Ischemic stroke due to severe CAS and cerebral ischemic/reperfusion (I/R) injury after the revascularization of CAS also adversely affect clinical outcomes. Melatonin is a pluripotent agent with potent anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, an...

Acute effects of ambient nitrogen oxides and interactions with temperature on cardiovascular mortality in Shenzhen, China
CONCLUSIONS: Low levels of nitrogen oxides showed acute and adverse impacts and the interactive roles of temperature on cardiovascular mortality. Cumulative effects were most significant and joint effects of nitrogen oxides required more attention. Population under 65 years old and population with stroke-related health condition were susceptible, especially days at lower temperature.PMID:34826935 | DOI:10.1016/j.chemosphere.2021.132255

Synthesis and biological evaluation of 1,2,4-triazole derivatives as potential Nrf2 activators for the treatment of cerebral ischemic injury
Eur J Med Chem. 2022 Mar 28;236:114315. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmech.2022.114315. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute ischemic stroke is a leading cause of disability and death. The development of neuroprotectants is an emerging strategy for the treatment of ischemic stroke. In this work, we designed and synthesized a series of 1,3,5-triaryl substituent triazole derivatives by introducing a phenolic group and phenyl ring to 3,5-diaryl substituents oxadiazole. Structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis showed that compounds with alkyl groups or with substituents at the 3-position possessed better protective effects. Among the ...

Telomere Length as a marker of biological aging: A critical review of recent literature
CONCLUSION: The present review attempted to examine the purported relation between leukocyte TL and age-related diseases such as CVD and more specific stroke and heart disease in view of the best established, comprehensive, medical and epidemiological criteria that have characterized the focused recent relevant research. Although several recommendations have been made that may contribute significantly to the field, a call for novel technical approaches and studies is mandatory to further elucidate the possible association.PMID:35838223 | DOI:10.2174/0929867329666220713123750
