Reconciling Marriage and Care after Stroke.
Abstract Most research on stroke's impact on couples has focused on the transition to caregiving/receiving. Despite considerable evidence that marriage is the primary source of support in the face of chronic conditions, little is known about what happens to marriage in the context of care after stroke. To address this gap, we undertook a qualitative grounded-theory study of 18 couples in which one partner had experienced a stroke. Findings revealed two interrelated themes of the couple processes: working out care, which involved discovering and addressing disruptions in day-to-day activities; and rethinking marria...

Men Lacking a Caregiver Have Greater Risk of Long ‐Term Nursing Home Placement After Stroke
ConclusionIn men aged 65 and older who have survived an ischemic stroke, the lack of an available caregiver is associated with triple the risk of NHP within 5 years.

Elderly Stroke Rehabilitation: Overcoming the Complications and Its Associated Challenges.
Authors: Lui SK, Nguyen MH Abstract There have been many advances in management of cerebrovascular diseases. However, stroke is still one of the leading causes of disabilities and mortality worldwide with significant socioeconomic burden. This review summarizes the consequences of stroke in the elderly, predictors of stroke rehabilitation outcomes, role of rehabilitation in neuronal recovery, importance of stroke rehabilitation units, and types of rehabilitation resources and services available in Singapore. We also present the challenges faced by the elderly stroke survivors in the local setting and propose strate...

Resilience and its correlates among first ischemic stroke survivors at acute stage of hospitalization from a tertiary hospital in China :a cross-sectional study.
CONCLUSION: General self-efficacy and coping style may be implied orientation in enhancing resilience of elderly patients with first ischemic stroke at acute hospitalization. Moreover, economic status may predict level of resilience. Highlights Resilience was measured in 147 older first-episode ischemic stroke survivors at acute hospitalization. General-efficacy was the strongest predictor of resilience. Resilience was significantly influenced by resignation. Coping strategy should be emphasized early after stroke. Moringa oleifera seed extract protects against brain damage in both the acute and delayed stages of ischemic stroke.
Abstract The extract of Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) seeds exerts various pharmacological effects. Our previous study demonstrated that M. oleifera seed extract (MSE) alleviates scopolamine-induced learning and memory impairment in mice. In the present study, we investigate the neuropharmacological properties of 70% ethanolic MSE in the acute and delayed stages of ischemic stroke. MSE may be effective for the prevention and/or treatment of acute ischemic stroke. The most effective dose was 500 mg/kg, and the therapeutic window seemed to be within 4 h after reperfusion. Additionally, we found that MSE treatme...

136 Early Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring Post Stroke
ConclusionIn this pilot study, through the use of early ABPM we found high rates of non-dipping nocturnal BP in patients following stroke, particularly in those with underlying atrial fibrillation. The availability of 24-hour BP might allow for more individualised antihypertensive management particularly at this high-risk acute stage. Furthermore the presence of abnormal circadian patterns might be a marker for conditions such as atrial fibrillation and obstructive sleep apnoea that compound stroke risk.

134 Does a Purely Occipital Lobe Stroke Lead to Significant Long Term Disability and Handicap?
ConclusionA persistent VFD results in long term problems including an increased risk of further vascular events, a reduction in overall independence and quality of life following an occipital lobe stroke. This study has led to a business plan for a dedicated hemianopia clinic.

297 Re-audit of Swallow Assessment in Acute Stroke Patients Following Introduction of a Full-time Speech Specialist
ConclusionIntroduction of a full-time speech and language specialist has increased the rates of swallow assessment in line with the national average. The overall rates of SALT interventions in dietary regimens highlights the need to increase overall assessment rates in patients with acute stroke.

A stroke of bad luck: new-onset mania in elderly patient following undetected stroke, a case report
The phenomenon of developing depression after a stroke is fairly common in the literature (29%) but developing mania after a stroke is rare reportedly to be 1-2% of stroke survivors (Starkstein). One of the earliest descriptions of mania after stroke was described in 1989 of the right hemisphere (Starkstein). In 2011, a systematic review looking at 32 studies identified 49 cases describing symptoms of mania post-stroke. At initial presentation, 92% of these patients presented with elevated mood, 71% with increased rate of speech, 69% with insomnia and 63% with agitation (Santos).

Seizures and Epilepsy After Stroke: Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Management
AbstractStroke is the leading cause of seizures and epilepsy in older adults. Patients who have larger and more severe strokes involving the cortex, are younger, and have acute symptomatic seizures and intracerebral haemorrhage are at highest risk of developing post-stroke epilepsy. Prognostic models, including the SeLECT and CAVE scores, help gauge the risk of epileptogenesis. Early electroencephalogram and blood-based biomarkers can provide information additional to the clinical risk factors of post-stroke epilepsy. The management of acute versus remote symptomatic seizures after stroke is markedly different. The choice ...

Movement behavior patterns composition remains stable, but individuals change their movement behavior pattern over time in people with a first-ever stroke
ConclusionsThe composition of movement behavior patterns remains stable over time. However, individuals change their movement behavior. Significantly more people allocated to a movement behavior pattern with higher health risks. The increase of people allocated to sedentary movers and sedentary prolongers is of great concern. It underlines the importance of improving or maintaining healthy movement behavior to prevent future health risks after stroke.

The association between fatigue severity and risk of falls among middle-aged and older Australian stroke survivors
CONCLUSION: This study revealed an association between an increasing risk of falls with increasing severity of post stroke fatigue. Accurate detection and management of fatigue may help reduce the risk of falls and should be the focus of future research.PMID:35796976 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-022-02179-9
