Anesthesia-Based Evaluation of Outcomes of Lower-Extremity Vascular Bypass Procedures
Conclusion: These results provide no evidence to support the systematic avoidance of general anesthesia for lower-extremity bypass procedures. These data suggest that anesthetic choice should be governed by local expertise and practice patterns.

Modeling anesthetic times. Predictors and implications for short-term outcomes
Conclusions: Modeling individually anesthetic induction and recovery time on the basis of operative and anesthetic procedure characteristics is feasible. Anesthetic and operative times do not impact perioperative morbidity and mortality.

Minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass versus off-pump coronary surgery through sternotomy.
CONCLUSIONS: MIDCAB can be performed safely in appropriately selected patients with outcomes comparable with OPCAB. The potential benefits include shorter hospital stay, reduced need for blood transfusion and faster recovery. PMID: 24112493 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Pediatric National Surgical Quality Improvement Program: Useful for Quality Improvement in Craniosynostosis Surgery?
Abstract: The American College of Surgeons and the American Pediatric Surgical Association collaborate to provide pediatric hospitals with multispeciality surgical outcomes data through the Pediatric National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP Peds). The authors used this national multicenter database to describe 30-day outcomes from craniosynostosis surgery and identify associations with perioperative events and blood transfusion. Data from NSQIP Peds were used to describe children undergoing craniosynostosis surgery. The authors examined statistical association of clinical risk factors with the defined end poin...

Nursing Home Status is an Independent Risk Factor for Adverse 30-Day Postoperative Outcomes after Common, Non-Emergent Inpatient Procedures
Conclusions These data suggest that, in addition to serving as a surrogate indicator of health status and current morbidity, residence in a nursing home makes an independent contribution to adverse postoperative outcomes.

Insurance Type and Major Complications After Hysterectomy
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between primary insurance type and major complications after hysterectomy. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on women with Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance who underwent hysterectomy from January 1, 2012, to July 1, 2014, and were included in the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative. Major complications within 30 days of surgery included the following: deep/organ space surgical site infection, deep venous and pulmonary thromboembolism, myocardial infarction or stroke, pneumonia or sepsis, blood transfusion, readmission, and dea...

Bivalirudin versus heparin in patients undergoing percutaneous peripheral interventions: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis suggests that bivalirudin use for percutaneous peripheral interventions is associated with lower all-cause mortality, bleeding, and access site complications as compared to heparin. Further large randomized trials are needed to confirm the current results. PMID: 30501582 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effect of Perioperative Blood Transfusion in Anemic Patients Undergoing Infrainguinal Bypass
Patients who present with lower extremity ischemia are frequently anemic, and the optimal transfusion threshold for this cohort has remained controversial. We sought to evaluate the effect of blood transfusion on major adverse cardiac events (MACE), including myocardial infarction, dysrhythmia, stroke, congestive heart failure, and 30-day mortality for these patients.

Low Grip Strength Associated with Clinical Outcomes after Total Hip Arthroplasty - A Prospective Case-Control Study
CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should be encouraged to include GS assessment in their evaluation of patients who planned to undergo THA in order to optimize the treatment of high-risk individuals.PMID:34080763 | DOI:10.1111/os.13007

Impact of Perioperative Blood Transfusion in Anemic Patients Undergoing Infra-Inguinal Bypass
The presence of perioperative anemia in vascular surgery patients has been shown to be associated with major adverse patient outcomes, including myocardial infarction, renal failure, stroke and all-cause mortality.1 Patients who present with lower extremity chronic limb-threatening ischemia are frequently anemic and red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is often performed with the goal to attenuate the risks associated with anemia with up to 37.5% of patients undergoing infra-inguinal bypass receiving transfusions in the perioperative period.
