Impact of Perioperative Blood Transfusion in Anemic Patients Undergoing Infra Inguinal Bypass

The presence of perioperative anemia in vascular surgery patients has been shown to be associated with major adverse patient outcomes, including myocardial infarction, renal failure, stroke and all-cause mortality.1 Patients who present with lower extremity chronic limb-threatening ischemia are frequently anemic and red blood cell transfusion is often performed with the goal to attenuate the risks associated with anemia with up to 37.5% of patients undergoing infra-inguinal bypass receiving transfusions in the perioperative period.
