Peak expiratory cough flow and respiratory muscle function in acute stroke patients
Conclusion: Stroke patients presents important impairment on cough and respiratory muscle function. No differences were observed in the main outcomes between dysphagic and non-dysphagic patients.

Sleep disorder level in stroke patients and related factors
Conclusions: In this study, an increase in sleep disorder was detected in stroke patients according to the control group. We found that functional status, sleep quality and depression were related to each other and that sleep quality deteriorated and functional status deteriorated with increasing depressive mood, and sleep quality and depressive mood also affected each other negatively in stroke patients.

Continuous positive pressure therapy usage and incident stroke in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: A nationwide population ‐ based cohort study
ConclusionsIt is possible that treatment with CPAP might be beneficial for protection against stroke, but this conclusion should be interpreted with caution. Future studies with satisfactory CPAP quality and duration are needed to validate this observation.

Respiratory function in chronic stroke patients: an observational study
Conclusion: Our results showed that chronic stroke patients show significant impairment in pulmonary function, cough effectiveness, and respiratory muscle strength compared to the control group, and as a consequence, a loss of functionality at this level.

The effects of medications for treating COPD and allied conditions on stroke: a population-based cohort study
This study aimed to investigate the clinical factors of stroke risk in COPD and allied conditions patients and associations between medications for treating COPD and allied conditions. The population-based study cohort comprised 24,173 patients diagnosed with COPD and allied conditions between 2000 and 2013, and 24,170 selected matched patients without COPD comprised the comparison cohort from a nationwide database. Cox-proportional hazard regression was performed to determine the impact of medical therapies, comorbidities, and other clinical factors on stroke risk. Of the 48,343 included patients, 1394 (2.9%) experienced ...

Risk of serious atrial fibrillation and stroke with use of bisphosphonates: Evidence from a meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: Evidence from RCT's and observational studies suggests a significantly increased risk of atrial fibrillation requiring hospitalization, but no increase in risk of stroke or cardiovascular mortality with the use of bisphosphonate. PMID: 23722644 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Recalibration of the HAS-BLED score - should haemorrhagic stroke account for 1 or 2 points?
Abstract Following a haemorrhagic stroke, it is uncertain whether this event scores 1 point (either for Stroke or Bleeding) or 2 points (1 point each for Stroke and Bleeding) on the HAS-BLED score. We investigated the value of a recalibration of the HAS-BLED score to account for 2 points from a haemorrhagic stroke. We analysed data from the Danish nationwide cohort of incident atrial fibrillation (AF) patients from January 1999 to December 2013. The primary outcome in this observational study was major bleeding. The original- and the recalibrated HAS-BLED scores were assessed and event rates of major bleeding...

The prevalence and clinical significance of sleep disorders in acute ischemic stroke patients —a questionnaire study
ConclusionsScreening for and intervening in the sleep problems of stroke patients could improve their outcome. As sleep disturbances are associated with short-term and/or long-term outcomes of strokes, active screening and intervention for sleep disturbances after strokes are needed.
