Dispute simmers over who first shared SARS-CoV-2 ’s genome
When GISAID, the widely used database for influenza and SARS-CoV-2 genomes, issued a statement last week about a set of controversial sequences from the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, China, the release explained by way of background that the repository was “an essential contributor to global health” trusted by thousands of data contributors from 215 nations and territories. But GISAID also included a claim that has been puzzling and infuriating some virologists for 3 years: It was the place where the first SARS-CoV-2 genomes were publicly shared, on 10 January 2020. That claim challenges contempo...

MRI and Traumatic Brain Injury: Where Are We Heading?
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is currently very much in the public consciousness. A quick Google search reveals over 150 million TBI-related hits, including several National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Department of Defense, and even National Football League (NFL) funded initiatives, such as the National Institutes of Health –sponsored TRACK-TBI study. I was therefore delighted when Drs Maralani and Symons invited me to write this introduction for their issue on “MRI and Traumatic Brain Injury,” for this issue of the Neuroimaging Clinics series.

The Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO)-wide Cohort
Am J Epidemiol. 2023 Mar 24:kwad071. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwad071. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO)-wide Cohort Study (EWC), a collaborative research design comprising 69 cohorts in 31 consortia, was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2016 to improve children's health in the United States. The EWC harmonizes extant data and collects new data using a standardized protocol, the ECHO-wide Cohort data Collection Protocol (EWCP). EWCP visits occur at least once per life stage, but the frequency and timing of the visits vary across cohorts. As of March 4, 20...

Correlation Analysis of Persistence and Recurrence of Stroke in Young Patients Based on Big Data in Healthcare
This study aims to analyze the correlation between the persistence and recurrence of stroke in young patients via big data in healthcare. It provides an in-depth introduction to the background of big data in healthcare and a detailed description of stroke symptoms, so as to better apply the Apriori parallelization algorithm based on compression matrix (PBCM) algorithm against the background of big data in healthcare to analyze it. In our study, patients were randomly divided into 2 groups. By observing the different persistent relationships in the groups, the factors affecting the patients' fasting blood glucose (FBG), gly...

Montelukast as a potential treatment for COVID-19
Expert Opin Pharmacother. 2023 Mar 16. doi: 10.1080/14656566.2023.2192866. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: : Montelukast is a leukotriene inhibitor that is widely used to treat chronic asthma and allergic rhinitis. The drug interferes with molecular signaling pathways produced by leukotrienes in a variety of cells and tissues throughout the human body that lead to tightening of airway muscles, production of aberrant pulmonary fluid (airway edema), and in some cases, pulmonary inflammation.AREAS COVERED: : Montelukast has also been noted to have anti-inflammatory properties, suggesting it may have a role in the ...

Comparing the clinical and cost-effectiveness of remote (telehealth and online) cognitive behavioral therapy-based treatments for high-impact chronic pain relative to usual care: study protocol for the RESOLVE multisite randomized control trial
DISCUSSION: This large-scale trial provides a unique opportunity to rigorously evaluate and compare the clinical and cost-effectiveness of 2 relatively low-cost and scalable modalities for providing CBT-CP-based treatments to persons with high-impact chronic pain, including those residing in rural and other medically underserved areas with limited access to these services.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04523714. This trial was registered on 24 August 2020.PMID:36927459 | PMC:PMC10018633 | DOI:10.1186/s13063-023-07165-8

Categorising implementation determinants and strategies within the US HIV implementation literature: a systematic review protocol
Introduction Despite decreased rates of new infections, HIV/AIDS continues to impact certain US populations. In order to achieve the goals laid out in the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) in the US initiative, implementation science is needed to expand the sustained use of effective prevention and treatment interventions, particularly among priority populations at risk for and living with HIV/AIDS. Over 200 HIV-related implementation studies have been funded by the US National Institutes of Health. Therefore, a comprehensive review of the literature identifying implementation determinants (barriers and facilitators) and categ...

Rigor, Reproducibility, and Transparency in Shared Research Resources: Follow-Up Survey and Recommendations for Improvements
J Biomol Tech. 2022 Aug 16;33(3):3fc1f5fe.fa789303. doi: 10.7171/3fc1f5fe.fa789303. eCollection 2022 Oct 15.ABSTRACTRigor, reproducibility, and transparency (RR&T) are essential components of all scientific pursuits. Shared research resources, also known as core facilities, are on the frontlines of ensuring robust RR&T practices. The Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities Committee on Core Rigor and Reproducibility conducted a follow-up survey 4 years after the initial 2017 survey to determine if core facilities have seen a positive impact of new RR&T initiatives (including guidance from the National I...
