Stroke Incidence in Survivors of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in South Korea: A Population-Based Longitudinal Study.
CONCLUSIONS CO poisoning is a high-risk factor for the development of stroke, evidenced by high incidences of stroke after CO poisoning. Practical strategies for preventing stroke after CO poisoning are needed, because stroke after CO poisoning affects adults of almost all ages, significantly increasing their socioeconomic burden. Analysis of the Relationship between Adult Asthma and Stroke: A Longitudinal Follow-Up Study Using the Korean National Sample Cohort.
Abstract Several previous studies demonstrated the risk of stroke in asthma patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke in asthma patients, independent of age, sex, income, region of residence, and past medical histories. The Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service-National Sample Cohort from 2002 through 2013 was used. Overall, 111,364 asthma patients ≥ 20 years old were matched to 111,364 control participants for age, sex, income, region of residence, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Asthma was classified using ICD-10 codes (J45 and J46) an...

Increased risk of mortality among haemodialysis patients with or without prior stroke: A nationwide population-based study in Taiwan.
Abstract Background & objectives: Patients with prior stroke (PS) undergoing chronic dialysis are at a high risk of mortality. However, little is known about the cumulative risk and survival rate of dialysis patients with long-term follow up. The aim of this study was to assess risks for mortality between patients with and without PS undergoing chronic haemodialysis (HD). Methods: The Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHRI-NHIRD-99182) was used and all adult patients (≥18 yr) with end stage renal disease (ESRD) who started maintenance HD between January 1, 1999, and December 31, 1999, were ...

Evaluating the Primary Prevention of Ischemic Stroke of Oral Antithrombotic Therapy in Head and Neck Cancer Patients with Radiation Therapy.
Abstract Although previous studies demonstrated the risk of ischemic stroke (IS) in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), the impact of oral antithrombotic therapy (OAT) on this risk has not yet been assessed. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of OAT in patients with HNC treated with RT. This retrospective cohort study was performed using the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan. A total of 37,638 patients diagnosed with HNC included in the study were classified as users and nonusers of OAT. Primary outcome was IS or transient ischemic attack (TIA), and secondary outcomes were ...

Comparing the economic burden of ischemic stroke patients with and without atrial fibrillation: a retrospective study in Beijing, China.
CONCLUSIONS: AF increased the use of healthcare resources, treatment cost, and economic burden in patients with IS. Therefore, prevention of cardio-embolic events patients with AF by anticoagulants may decrease the economic burden in patients with IS. PMID: 28657348 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Long-term outcomes of lercanidipine versus other calcium channel blockers in newly-diagnosed hypertension: a nationwide cohort study.
CONCLUSION: In newly diagnosed patients with hypertension, lercanidipine was superior than nifedipine in the six-year period when the analyzed endpoint was stroke. PMID: 28300435 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effectiveness and Safety of Non-Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants in Asian Patients with Atrial Fibrillation and Valvular Heart Disease.
CONCLUSIONS: NOACs had a comparable risk of ischemic stroke and bleeding in patients with AF and VHD, and reduced the risk of venous thromboembolism, intracranial hemorrhage, and mortality, compared to warfarin. Therefore, NOAC is an effective and safe alternative to warfarin in these patients. PMID: 33538623 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk reduction of long-term major adverse cardiovascular events after endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy in palmar hyperhidrosis
ConclusionPH patients who underwent ETS showed a reduced risk of MACE over a long-term follow-up period. This result could provide support for patients with PH who are considering undergoing ETS because of its additional cardiovascular benefits.

Administrative claims data to support pragmatic clinical trial outcome ascertainment on cardiovascular health.
CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the value of supplementing longitudinal site-based clinical studies with administrative claims data. Our results suggest that claims data together with network partner electronic health record data constitute an effective vehicle to capture patient outcomes since >30% of patients have non-fatal and fatal events outside of enrolling sites.
