Don ’t take opioids off the market. Make it harder to abuse them.
How can we combat the opioid epidemic? One of the government’s most recent suggestions is to take Opana ER, an opioid indicated for very severe pain, off the market. The request, filed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in June, was linked to concerns of abuse-related HIV and hepatitis C outbreaks. But removing access to opioids altogether isn’t the solution. There are individuals suffering from chronic pain who need or strongly benefit from these drugs. The National Center for Health Statistics estimates that a fourth of the nation’s population suffers from pain lasting longer than 24 hours. Millions more suff...

Cellular and Molecular Machinery of Neuropathic Pain: an Emerging Insight
Curr Pharmacol Rep. 2022 May 23:1-9. doi: 10.1007/s40495-022-00294-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: Neuropathic pain (NP) has been ubiquitously characterized by lesion and its linked somatosensory system either the central nervous system (CNS) or peripheral nervous system (PNS) This PNS episode is the most prevalent site of NP origin and is found to be associated with afferent nerve fibers carrying pain signals from injured/trauma site to the CNS including the brain. Several kinds of pharmacotherapeutic drugs shuch as analgesics, anti-convulsants, and anti-depressants are being employed for the its possi...

An epidemic of chikungunya in northwestern Bangladesh in 2011.
CONCLUSION: The consistently high attack rate by age groups suggested recent introduction of chikungunya in this community. Mosquito control efforts should be enhanced to reduce the risk of continued transmission and to improve global health security. PMID: 30856200 [PubMed - in process]

Capacity changes in German  certified chest pain units during COVID-19 outbreak response
ConclusionsCertified German CPUs are able to maintain adequate coverage for chest pain patients in COVID-19 pandemic despite structural changes. However, at this time, it appears important to add operating procedures during pandemic outbreaks to the certification criteria of forthcoming guidelines either at the individual CPU level or more centrally steered by the German Cardiac Society or the European Society of Cardiology.

Autologous fat grafting seems to alleviate post-herpetic neuralgia – a feasibility study investigating patient-reported levels of pain.
We report on the first human study using autologous fat grafting for treating PHN. Our hypothesis was that fat grafting can alleviate pain and improve Quality of Life (QoL) in patients suffering from PHN.

Awake Major Abdominal Surgeries in the COVID-19 Era
CONCLUSIONS: In our experience, awake laparotomy under regional anesthesia resulted feasible, safe, painless, and, in specific cases, was the only viable option. This approach allowed prevention of the need of postoperative intensive monitoring during the COVID-19 era. In such a peculiar time, we believe it could become part of an ICU-preserving strategy and could limit viral transmission inside theatres.PMID:33688385 | PMC:PMC7920720 | DOI:10.1155/2021/8763429
