Individual and structural determinants of COVID-19 vaccine uptake in a marginalized community in the United States
Vaccine. 2023 Aug 5:S0264-410X(23)00923-4. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.07.077. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSocially and medically vulnerable groups (e.g., people 65 years or older, minoritized racial groups, non-telework essential workers, and people with comorbid conditions) experience barriers to COVID-19 prevention and treatment, increased burden of disease, and increased risk of death from COVID-19. Researchers are paying increased attention to social determinants of health (SDH) in explaining inequities in COVID-19-related health outcomes and rates of vaccine uptake. The purpose of the present manuscript is to ident...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, June 26th 2023
This study explored the association between different cooking fuel types and the risk of cancer and all-cause mortality among seniors constructing Cox regression models. Data were obtained by linking waves of 6, 7, and 8 of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, which included a total of 7,269 participants who were 65 years old and over. Cooking fuels were categorized as either biomass, fossil, or clean fuels. And the effects of switching cooking fuels on death risk were also investigated using Cox regression models. The results indicate that, compared with the users of clean fuels, individuals using bio...

Sexual and reproductive health needs of young women living with perinatally acquired HIV
CONCLUSION: High rates of unplanned pregnancy, STIs and cervical abnormalities highlight the continuing SRH needs of YWLPaHIV and requirement for open access to integrated HIV/SRH services despite pandemic restrictions.PMID:37279784 | DOI:10.1177/09564624231179768

Effects of public health emergencies of international concern on disease control: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Socioeconomic inequity is a determinant of the effects of public health emergencies of international concern within affected populations. The diversion of resources and attention from health authorities disproportionately affects vulnerable populations and can lead, over time, to a weakening of health systems. The analysis of the effects of public health emergencies is important for the development of new protocols that can better respond to future crises.PMID:37089787 | PMC:PMC10120386 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2023.74

Health care provider knowledge around shared clinical decision-making regarding HPV vaccination of adults aged 27-45 years in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that there are physician knowledge gaps related to SCDM for HPV vaccination. To improve access to HPV vaccination for people most likely to benefit, increasing availability and use of decision aids to support SCDM discussions might help healthcare providers and patients jointly make the most informed decisions about HPV vaccination.PMID:36990828 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.02.051

Viral hepatitis in persons living with HIV in the post-COVID era
AIDS Rev. 2023;25(1):1-13. doi: 10.24875/AIDSRev.M23000061.ABSTRACTCoinfection with hepatitis viruses A to E is frequent in persons living with HIV (PLWH) and causes significant morbidity and mortality. Oro-fecal transmissible hepatitis A and E mostly produce acute self-limited episodes in poor income regions and in non-vaccinated travelers. In high-income countries, outbreaks of hepatitis A occur in men having sex with men (MSM) and chronic hepatitis E is occasionally reported among PLWH with severe immunodeficiency. Chronic hepatitis B, C, and D are frequent in PLWH in highly endemic regions and globally in persons who i...
