Hypertension in HIV: Management and Treatment.
Abstract Hypertension is among the leading risk factors for cardiovascular disease and accounts for 6% of adult deaths worldwide. It is estimated that in 2013, hypertension was responsible for at least 45% of deaths due to heart disease and 51% of deaths due to stroke. Accordingly, management of hypertension and its long-term complications in HIV-infected subjects is a significant component of routine care. The choice of an effective anti-hypertensive therapy in HIV-infected patients is important and must be made carefully in order to prevent cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in these patients. Renal Impairment and Cardiovascular Disease in HIV-Positive Individuals: The D:A:D Study
Conclusions. Among HIV-positive individuals in a large contemporary cohort, a strong relation between confirmed impaired eGFR and CVD was observed. This finding highlights the need for renal preventive measures and intensified monitoring for emerging CVD, particularly in older individuals with continuously low eGFRs.

Inflammation, immune activation, and cardiovascular disease in HIV
Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in people living with HIV. Several epidemiological studies have shown an increased risk of myocardial infarction and stroke compared to uninfected controls. Although traditional risk factors contribute to this increased risk of cardiovascular disease, HIV-specific mechanisms likely also play a role. Systemic inflammation has been linked to cardiovascular disease in several populations suffering from chronic inflammation, including people living with HIV. Although antiretroviral therapy reduces immune activation, levels of inflammatory markers re...

History of AIDS in HIV-Infected Patients Is Associated With Higher In-Hospital Mortality Following Admission for Acute Myocardial Infarction and Stroke
Conclusions. Patients with a history of AIDS were significantly more likely than uninfected patients to die during hospitalization after admission for AMI or stroke. This disparity was not observed when infected patients without a history of AIDS were compared to uninfected patients, implying that preserving immune function may improve cardiovascular outcomes in HIV-infected persons.
