Baseline immune states (BIS) associated with vaccine responsiveness and factors that shape the BIS
Semin Immunol. 2023 Sep 15;70:101842. doi: 10.1016/j.smim.2023.101842. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVaccines are among the greatest inventions in medicine, leading to the elimination or control of numerous diseases, including smallpox, polio, measles, rubella, and, most recently, COVID-19. Yet, the effectiveness of vaccines varies among individuals. In fact, while some recipients mount a robust response to vaccination that protects them from the disease, others fail to respond. Multiple clinical and epidemiological factors contribute to this heterogeneity in responsiveness. Systems immunology studies fueled by advances in...

Potential drugs in COVID-19 management
Curr Med Chem. 2023 Jul 17. doi: 10.2174/0929867331666230717154101. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe SARS-CoV-2 virus first emerged in China in December 2019 and quickly spread worldwide. Despite the absence of a vaccination or authorized drug specifically developed to combat this infection, certain medications recommended for other diseases have shown potential effectiveness in treating COVID-19, although without definitive confirmation. This review aims to evaluate the existing literature on the efficacy of these medications against COVID-19. The review encompasses various potential treatments, including antiviral medic...

Vaccination during pregnancy: A golden opportunity to embrace
Int J Gynaecol Obstet. 2023 Jul 7. doi: 10.1002/ijgo.14981. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImmunization strategies are part of routine pregnancy care to prevent infectious diseases in the mother, the fetus, and the newborn. Maternal immunization recommendations followed the recognition of the consequences of infectious diseases in pregnancy, including vertical transmission and perinatal consequences. The recent COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the issue of vaccination among pregnant individuals. Recommendations vary globally; however, Tdap, influenza, and, recently, COVID-19 vaccines are routinely recommended during pregnancy....

Effects of public health emergencies of international concern on disease control: a systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Socioeconomic inequity is a determinant of the effects of public health emergencies of international concern within affected populations. The diversion of resources and attention from health authorities disproportionately affects vulnerable populations and can lead, over time, to a weakening of health systems. The analysis of the effects of public health emergencies is important for the development of new protocols that can better respond to future crises.PMID:37089787 | PMC:PMC10120386 | DOI:10.26633/RPSP.2023.74

A sting in the tail-are antibodies against the C-terminus of Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein protective?
EMBO Mol Med. 2023 Apr 21:e17556. doi: 10.15252/emmm.202317556. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMalaria remains a huge burden on global public health. Annually there are more than 200 million cases with > 600,000 deaths worldwide, the vast majority of which occur within Sub-Saharan Africa (WHO; World Malaria Report, 2021). Malaria disease is the consequence of infection by a protozoan parasite from the genus Plasmodium with most morbidity and mortality caused by P. falciparum. With rates of infection plateauing and rebounding in some areas (in particular, as a result of the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic), the...

Meeting Summary: Global Vaccine and Immunization Research Forum, 2021
Vaccine. 2023 Feb 18:S0264-410X(23)00163-9. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.02.028. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe 2021 Global Vaccine and Immunization Research Forum highlighted the considerable advances and recent progress in research and development for vaccines and immunization, critically reviewed lessons learned from COVID-19 vaccine programs, and looked ahead to opportunities for this decade. For COVID-19, decades of investments in basic and translational research, new technology platforms, and vaccines targeting prototype pathogens enabled a rapid, global response. Unprecedented global coordination and partnership h...
