Opioid Use, Disposition, and Parent Satisfaction Following Common Pediatric Surgical Procedures
CONCLUSIONS: Despite heightened awareness of the opioid epidemic, there is still a poor understanding of appropriate pain control regimens in the pediatric surgical population. We demonstrate that most patients are discharged home with excess opioids and that many families save the leftover pills/liquid. Further research and education are encouraged to limit the use of opioids in standard pediatric surgical procedures.PMID:37555374 | DOI:10.1177/00031348231191239

Impact of pneumoperitoneum pressure during laparoscopic hysterectomy: A randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION(S): Reduced pneumoperitoneum insufflation pressure during laparoscopic hysterectomy negatively impacted surgeon satisfaction with a trend towards longer operative times and greater blood loss, and did not positively impact patient satisfaction, postoperative pain, opioid demand, or discharge timing.PMID:36434823 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejogrb.2022.11.011

Modifying Post-operative Opioid Stewardship Through a System of Educational Feedback
Discussion: An intervention that provided general surgeons with feedback about their post-operative prescription patterns and data on post-operative opioid utilization by patients decreased prescribed MMED.PMID:36418926 | DOI:10.1177/00031348221129511

Sleeve-Dor Fundoplication - An Innovative Surgical Technique to Avoid the Epidemic Long Term de Novo Gastroesophageal Reflux and Barrett ´s Esophagus After Sleeve Gastrectomy for Obesity
DISCUSSION: Based on our preliminary and literature experiences, the SG with anterior Dor fundoplication (Sleeve-Dor) procedure could provide favorable safety profile, satisfactory reflux control and good bariatric outcomes. The complication rate is lower compared to published for Nissen Sleeve or Sleeve-Rossetti technique, with no leaks or major complications recorded to date. Sleeve-Dor procedure may be a potential primary and standard surgery for morbidly obese patients, especially for patients with preoperative GERD symptoms without major findings at endoscopy.PMID:36413570 | DOI:10.1177/15533506221139967

Impact of an Educational Intervention on the Opioid Knowledge and Prescribing Behaviors of Resident Physicians
DISCUSSION: Resident physicians have an essential role in combating the opioid epidemic. There was a significant improvement in various aspects of opioid-related pain management among emergency medicine, internal medicine, and general surgery residents following the educational interventions. We recommend that medical school and residency programs consider including opioid-related pain management in their curricula.PMID:35494931 | PMC:PMC9038586 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.23508

Evaluation of Postoperative Pain Management Using an Opioid-Sparing Protocol in Pediatric Surgical Patients
DISCUSSION: Among young patients who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy or cholecystectomy, the administration of opioids during hospitalization for postoperative pain was minimal. The opioid sparing protocol did not reduce the amount of inpatient postoperative opioids administered but found a decrease in the amount of opioids prescribed at discharge. The study findings identified further areas of intervention and education to optimize postoperative opioid prescribing after these common pediatric surgical procedures.PMID:34794319 | DOI:10.1177/00031348211054709

Results of Gastrojejunal Plication for Inadequate Weight Loss follow Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
ConclusionThe exact reasons for weight loss failure after RYGB remain incompletely elucidated and are probably multifactorial. Pouch resizing could be a valuable option for weight loss failure or regain in selected patients with a dilated gastric pouch after RYGB in the short term. Careful selection of candidates for this procedure through psychiatric and nutritional evaluations and volumetric measures of the gastric pouch, preferably using CT, is mandatory to identify those patients most likely to benefit from revision.

Ketamine infusion reduces narcotic requirements following gastric bypass surgery: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: Ketamine successfully reduced the amount of opioids required to control bariatric patients' pain at 24 hours postoperatively, but not over the 48-hour postoperative period.PMID:33451962 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2020.11.027

Bariatric Surgery in China: How Is This New Concept Going?
ConclusionsBariatric surgery is still at an early stage in China, but is now experiencing an explosive growth. A national registry system needs to be established to record and provide precise data.
