Vaccination acceptability in the French general population and related determinants, 2000-2021
This study describes the evolution of vaccination acceptability and associated determinants in the French general population between 2000 and 2021, and vaccinations with the highest vaccine hesitancy between 2010 and 2021.METHODS: Data were collected from the nine national 'Health Barometer' cross-sectional surveys conducted between 2000 and 2021. These surveys included French-speaking individuals aged 18-75 years old who were selected through randomly generated landline and mobile phone numbers. Participants were asked about their acceptability of vaccination in general and their vaccine hesitancy toward any particular va...

Interspecies Transmission of Swine Influenza A Viruses and Human Seasonal Vaccine-Mediated Protection Investigated in Ferret Model
Emerg Infect Dis. 2023 Sep;29(9):1798-1807. doi: 10.3201/eid2909.230066.ABSTRACTWe investigated the infection dynamics of 2 influenza A(H1N1) virus isolates from the swine 1A.3.3.2 (pandemic 2009) and 1C (Eurasian, avian-like) lineages. The 1C-lineage virus, A/Pavia/65/2016, although phylogenetically related to swine-origin viruses, was isolated from a human clinical case. This strain infected ferrets, a human influenza model species, and could be transmitted by direct contact and, less efficiently, by airborne exposure. Infecting ferrets and pigs (the natural host) resulted in mild or inapparent clinical signs comparable ...

An Advax-CpG adjuvanted recombinant H5 hemagglutinin vaccine protects mice against lethal influenza infection
This study tested the ability of adjuvants based on delta inulin (Advax™) alone or combined with a TLR9 agonist (Advax-CpG™) to enhance the immunogenicity of recombinant H5 hemagglutinin antigen expressed in insect cells (rH5HA) to protect mice against lethal influenza infection. The Advax-adjuvanted rH5HA induced high serum hemagglutination inhibition activity, as well as Th1 and Th2 cytokine secreting CD4 and CD8 T cells. Immunization protected mice against a lethal heterosubtypic H5N1 virus challenge. Mice immunized with an Advax-adjuvanted rHA2 stem antigen prepared by enzymatic cleavage of rH5HA produced serum ant...

SARS-CoV-2 variants, its recombinants and epigenomic exploitation of host defenses
Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis. 2023 Aug 5:166836. doi: 10.1016/j.bbadis.2023.166836. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSince 2003, we have seen the emergence of novel viruses, such as SARS-CoV-1, MERS, ZIKA, swine flu virus H1N1, Marburg, Monkeypox, Ebola, and SARS-CoV-2, but none of them gained pandemic proportions similar to SARS-CoV-2. This could be attributed to unique viral traits, allowing its rapid global dissemination following its emergence in October 2019 in Wuhan, China, which appears to be primarily driven by the emergence of highly transmissible and virulent variants that also associate, in some cases, with s...

Phylogenetic analysis and docking study of neuraminidase gene of influenza A/H1N1 viruses circulating in Iran from 2010 to 2019
This study highlighted the evolutionary trend of influenza A virus/H1N1 circulating in Iran, which provides a preliminary viewpoint for a better comprehension of new emerging strains' virulence and thus, more appropriate monitoring of influenza virus A/H1N1 during each outbreak season.PMID:37490957 | DOI:10.1016/j.virusres.2023.199182

Influenza transmission during COVID-19 measures downscaling in Greece, August 2022: evidence for the need of continuous integrated surveillance of respiratory viruses
Euro Surveill. 2023 Jul;28(28):2200754. doi: 10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.28.2200754.ABSTRACTAfter the near absence of influenza and other respiratory viruses during the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic, an increased activity of mainly influenza A(H3N2) was detected at the beginning of August 2022 in Greece on three islands. Of 33 cases with respiratory symptoms testing negative for SARS-CoV-2 with rapid antigen tests, 24 were positive for influenza: 20 as A(H3N2) subtype and four as A(H1N1)pdm09 subtype. Phylogenetic analysis of selected samples from both subtypes was performed and they fell into clusters within sub...
