Benzos and Buprenorphine
The high safety of buprenorphine, except when combined with a benzodiazepine, has been twisted in comments about the drug (and in the minds of regulators) to buprenorphine being uniquely dangerous when combined with benzodiazepines, which is not true. I’ve heard more and more from insurers, regulators, and well-meaning agencies about the dangers of combining buprenorphine and benzodiazepines.   Some insurers protest paying for buprenorphine if patients are taking benzodiazepines.  Medicaid recently sent a letter that described a ‘severe risk’ of using benzodiazepines in patients on buprenorphine.  And...

Sara—the Search and Rescue Dog—and her Game of Fetch
Editor’s note: Jana Sweeny is the American Red Cross’s Director of International Communications. She and her team are traveling around Colombia this week, visiting communities made safer by the Red Cross.   As we walk into the Colombian Red Cross training center in Pereira, a yellow lab comes bouncing up, waving her tail enthusiastically. The ball in her mouth turns out to be a lime and she is ready to play fetch. Because I can never say no to a dog, I begin a game of “fetch the lime” with her. It turns out that Sara isn’t just a fun companion–she is a retired search and rescue dog.  The Colo...

Authorship Order in Medical Education Publications: In Search of Practical Guidance for the Community.
This study describes principles commonly applied to authorship order decisions within the medical education community and educators' opinions about the significance of authorship order. Approach: A questionnaire was developed to ascertain current practices related to authorship decisions. Sixteen items were rated in terms of frequency of actual use and the desirability of the practice using a 4-point rating scale: 1 (never), 2 (sometimes), 3 (often), and 4 (always). Additional questions addressed the perceived significance of authorship order. The last set of questions provided information about respondents' personal and c...

Prescribe to Save Lives: Improving Buprenorphine Prescribing Among HIV Clinicians
Conclusions: Although the PtSL intervention resulted in increases in buprenorphine training and prescriber certification, there was no meaningful increase in buprenorphine prescribing. Engaging and teaching HIV clinicians about overdose and naloxone rescue may facilitate training in buprenorphine prescribing but will not result in more treatment with buprenorphine without additional interventions.

Staff Attitudes toward Buprenorphine before and after Implementation of an Office-Based Opioid Treatment Program in an Urban Teaching Clinic
CONCLUSIONS: Staff in a primary care clinic were less likely than providers to believe in the effectiveness of buprenorphine treatment or that PCPs should prescribe it for OUD. That their beliefs substantially changed after implementation of an OBOT program suggests that direct experience impacts attitudes.PMID:34282999 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2021.1928206

Psychology Around the Net: February 17, 2018
Hello, Psych Central readers. For this week’s Psychology Around the Net, we’re diving into vibes and what causes us to feel them, how we can use our emotions to cause positive environmental change, ways to help children better understand and practice mindfulness, and more. I’ve chosen to not address the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in this week’s Psychology Around the Net, as many of our Psych Central writers have already and are continuing to do so. I encourage you to browse our latest blog posts for our team’s insights. How Real Are Vibes: Th...

Teaching residents to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorder: Insights from a community-based residency program
Despite the impact of the opioid overdose crisis on the United States, few physicians are trained to provide treatment with buprenorphine. While research has described some factors contributing to comfort in providing buprenorphine treatment, more research is needed to identify optimal strategies to produce physicians who prescribe this medication.

MeSH and text-word search strategies: precision, recall, and their implications for library instruction
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of text-word and MeSH search strategies on precision and recall. The combination of text-word and MeSH strategies is recommended to achieve the most comprehensive results. These results support the idea that MeSH or a similar controlled vocabulary should be taught to experienced and knowledgeable students and practitioners who require a myriad of resources for their literature searches.PMID:35210959 | PMC:PMC8830400 | DOI:10.5195/jmla.2022.1283

Effectiveness of job search interventions: A meta-analytic review.
The current meta-analytic review examined the effectiveness of job search interventions in facilitating job search success (i.e., obtaining employment). Major theoretical perspectives on job search interventions, including behavioral learning theory, theory of planned behavior, social cognitive theory, and coping theory, were reviewed and integrated to derive a taxonomy of critical job search intervention components. Summarizing the data from 47 experimentally or quasi-experimentally evaluated job search interventions, we found that the odds of obtaining employment were 2.67 times higher for job seekers participating in jo...

How visual search relates to visual diagnostic performance: a narrative systematic review of eye-tracking research in radiology
Abstract Eye tracking research has been conducted for decades to gain understanding of visual diagnosis such as in radiology. For educational purposes, it is important to identify visual search patterns that are related to high perceptual performance and to identify effective teaching strategies. This review of eye-tracking literature in the radiology domain aims to identify visual search patterns associated with high perceptual performance. Databases PubMed, EMBASE, ERIC, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science were searched using ‘visual perception’ OR ‘eye tracking’ AND ‘radiology’ and synonyms. Two aut...

An interview with Reyna Favis, author of Soul Search
Hi everyone, and this week I’d like to introduce Reyna Favis to the Thursday Throng. Reyna spent more than a dozen years as a drug development genomics scientist before turning to write fiction full-time. Her previous publishing history includes scholarly articles. When not writing, she responds to callouts as a canine handler for search and rescue. She lives in Warren County New Jersey with her husband, a search dog and a coterie of pets. What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you? I used to work for corporate America and I once gave a presentation where the introductory slide borrowed heavily fro...
