Impact of methotrexate treatment on vaccines immunogenicity in adult rheumatological patients - Lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Aug 3;165:115254. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115254. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the development of new biological and synthetic targeted therapies, methotrexate remains one of the most commonly used immunomodulatory drugs in rheumatology. However, its effect on the immunogenicity of vaccines has been studied only to a limited extent until recently, resulting in the lack of clear guidelines on the use of methotrexate during vaccination. Significant progress was made during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the dynamic development of research on vaccines, including patients with autoimmune inf...

Donor-Derived Infections: Monitoring of Posttransplant Infections and Safety Lessons From the Opioid Epidemic
CONCLUSIONS: Organ transplant from donors meeting donor risk criteria for disease transmission can be performed safely with appropriate informed consent and rigorous pre- and posttransplant microbiological testing. Enhanced compliance with vaccination for hepatitis B virus should be tracked. New sequencing technologies developed for investigation of undiagnosed infections and in xenotransplantation may inform future directions for donor screening. Such tools may increase the safe utilization of organs from donors who have potential risk for transmission of infection to recipients.PMID:36018015 | DOI:10.6002/ect.DonorSymp.2022.L17

Impact of technological developments on infectious disease epidemiology: Lessons from the first 100 years of AJE
Am J Epidemiol. 2022 Mar 31:kwac064. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwac064. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTechnological developments in laboratory and epidemiology methods combined with increasing computing power have synergistically increased our understanding of the epidemiology of infectious disease. Using historic examples from the first 100 years of AJE to illustrate how these developments provided the foundation for the rapid detection of the agent causing COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, from its transmission efficiency and modalities, risk factors and natural history to the evaluation of new vaccines and treatments to control its spread a...

Increasing hepatitis B vaccination coverage of healthcare workers - global lessons for South Africa
Curr Opin Immunol. 2021 Apr 2;71:6-12. doi: 10.1016/j.coi.2021.03.010. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHealthcare workers (HCWs) are at high risk of contracting hepatitis B (HB), a severe blood-borne vaccine-preventable disease, caused by HB virus (HBV) infection. Low HB vaccine (HepB) coverage has resulted in suboptimal protection and high HBV infection rates in South African HCWs. Studies from Africa have identified cost; unavailability/lack of access to HepB; and lack of awareness/knowledge of HB and HepB, as barriers to HCW uptake. Studies from Europe show little difference in HepB coverage between countries mandating ve...
