Emerging Subspecialties in Neurology: Palliative care
As we work to find cures for so many devastating neurologic injuries and diseases, our patients suffer tremendously on a daily basis. Individuals with conditions including stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson disease (PD), muscular dystrophies, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and nervous system malignancies share a host of physical, emotional, and existential symptoms that can be difficult to treat. In addition, patients and their families face the realities of loss of function, loss of ability to communicate, and lifespans limited by the neurologic diagnosis or complications related to it (e.g., dysphagia, immobilit...

Summary: International Kidney Cancer Symposium
Conclusions:
Ideal ischemia time is 20-25 minutes or less improves short and long term renal function. >25 minutes carried 5 year risk of new onset stage 4 CKD
No differences on GFR for cold vs. warm ischemia times
Preoperative GFR and the percent of kidney preserved was a better predictor of post op GFR.
No ischemia preserves renal function better than warm.
Longer cold ischemia times were equivalent to shorter warm ischemia times.
Quality and quantity of the remaining kidney is associated with ultimate renal function.

Pain: a content review of undergraduate pre-registration nurse education in the United Kingdom
Pain is a global health issue with poor assessment and management of pain associated with serious disability and detrimental socio economic consequences. Pain is also a closely associated symptom of the three major causes of death in the developed world; Coronary Heart Disease, Stroke and Cancer. There is a significant body of work which indicates that current nursing practice has failed to address pain as a priority, resulting in poor practice and unnecessary patient suffering.Additionally nurse education appears to lack focus or emphasis on the importance of pain assessment and its management.

Sickle cell disease: when and how to transfuse.
Authors: Howard J
Abstract
Blood transfusion remains an important therapeutic intervention in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), aiming to both increase the oxygen carrying capacity of blood and to reduce the complications of vaso-occlusion. Simple, manual exchange and automated exchange can be effective in reducing the acute and chronic complications of SCD, and the advantages and disadvantages of each methodology mean they all have a role in different situations. Evidence for the role of emergency transfusion in the management of the acute complications of SCD, including acute pain and acute chest syndrome,...
