Vaginal Microbiota Profile in first-trimester miscarriages cases
In this study, 435 vaginal swabs were collected from aborted women in Maternity Teaching Hospitals in Erbil and Shahid Dr. Khalid Hospital in Koya. We characterized the vaginal microbiota diversity and composition in first-trimester abortion and investigated the association between bacterial vaginosis and abortion before 12 weeks. Cultural, morphological, and biochemical characteristics for each bacterial genus were discovered, and VITEK-2 system was used to identify isolated bacteria. Samples from each type of bacteria were selected for sequencing utilizing 16 rRNA genes examining V4-V8 region for bacterial profiles. Bact...

Assessing the impacts of L-carnitine and modafinil on fatigue in Iraqi multiple sclerosis patients
J Adv Pharm Technol Res. 2023 Jul-Sep;14(3):226-228. doi: 10.4103/JAPTR.JAPTR_225_23. Epub 2023 Jul 28.ABSTRACTFatigue is a prevalent symptom experienced by individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), which greatly affects their daily activities and causes frustration and depression, thus affecting their lives and society. This can be prevented through the use of medicines such as L-carnitine and modafinil. The study aimed to examine the effect of L-carnitine and modafinil on fatigue and which one is better for MS patients. This was a clinical trial. This clinical trial was conducted in cooperation between Al-Kut U...

Maintenance anlotinib improves the survival prognosis of extensive-stage small cell lung cancer: a single-arm, prospective, phase II study
Am J Cancer Res. 2023 Aug 15;13(8):3679-3685. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe extent to which anlotinib provides survival benefits in the maintenance therapy of extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of anlotinib monotherapy as maintenance therapy following induction chemotherapy in ES-SCLC patients. 27 ES-SCLC patients registered at the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were screened from February 2022 to October 2022, of which 3 were not eligible. Eligible patients in stable status after first-line...

Use and Quality of Blood Cultures for the Diagnosis of Bloodstream Infections: A Cross-Sectional Study in the Ho Teaching Hospital, Ghana, 2019-2021
This study used secondary medical and laboratory records to describe blood CDST requests by clinicians and the quality of CDST processes for the diagnosis of BSI among patients admitted to HTH from 2019 to 2021. Of 4278 patients, 33% were infants. Pneumonia and neonatal sepsis cases were 40% and 22%, respectively. Only 8% (351/4278) had blood CDST requested. Of 94% (329/351) blood CDST processed and reported, only 7% (22/329) were culture-positive, with likely contaminants being recovered from 16% (52/329) of the specimens. The duration from admission to request was 2 days (IQR: 0-5), and Further qualitative studies must b...

A hospital care coordination team intervention for patients with multimorbidity: A practice-based, participatory pilot study
This study aims to develop and pilot a hospital care coordination team intervention for patients with multimorbidity and identify key uncertainties.METHODS: Practice-based, participatory pilot study with mixed methods in a middle-large teaching hospital. We included adult patients who had visited seven or more outpatient specialist clinics in 2018. The intervention consisted of an intake, a comprehensive review by a dedicated care coordination team, a consultation to discuss results and two follow-up appointments. We collected both quantitative and qualitative data.RESULTS: Out of 131 invited patients, 28 participants rece...

Clinical findings and prognostic factors for mortality in hospitalized dogs with leishmaniosis: aretrospective study
Comp Immunol Microbiol Infect Dis. 2023 Aug 23;101:102041. doi: 10.1016/j.cimid.2023.102041. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis retrospective study evaluated factors responsible for mortality of dogs hospitalized for Canine Leishmaniosis. Medical records of 31 dogs with leishmaniosis from a Portuguese Veterinary Teaching Hospital were examined between August 2018 and January 2022. Females (n = 18) and pure breed dogs (n = 27) were overrepresented, with higher frequency of Labrador Retriever (n = 4). Median age was 7 years (interquartile range=7). Most had historical findings of lethargy (n = 26) and the commonest clinicopa...

A common 18F-FDG PET radiomic signature to predict survival in patients with HPV-induced cancers
Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging. 2023 Aug 26. doi: 10.1007/s00259-023-06320-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLocally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) and anal and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC and OPSCC) are mostly caused by oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HPV). In this paper, we developed machine learning (ML) models based on clinical, biological, and radiomic features extracted from pre-treatment fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ([18F]-FDG PET) images to predict the survival of patients with HPV-induced cancers. For this purpose, cohorts from five institutions were used: two cohorts o...

Transmission of clones of carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli between a hospital and an urban wastewater treatment plant
In this study, water samples were collected over one year from a WWTP in Jinan, Shandong province, China, from different functional sites in the wastewater treatment process. Carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli (CREC) were isolated by selective cultivation and whole-genome sequenced to investigate the occurrence and characteristics of CREC in the WWTP. A total of 77 CREC isolates were included in the study and the detection rate of CREC in the WWTP water inlet was found to be 85%. An additional 10 CREC were isolated from a nearby teaching hospital during the sampling period and included for comparison to the environmenta...
