Overview of medical physics education and research programs in a non-academic environment
J Appl Clin Med Phys. 2023 Aug 21:e14124. doi: 10.1002/acm2.14124. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNorthwest Medical Physics Center (NMPC) is a nonprofit organization that provides clinical physics support to over 35 radiation therapy facilities concentrated in the Pacific Northwest. Although clinical service is the primary function of NMPC, the diverse array of clinical sites and physics expertise has allowed for the establishment of structured education and research programs, which are complementary to the organization's clinical mission. Three clinical training programs have been developed at NMPC: a therapy medical physi...

Letters of recommendation for gynecologic oncology fellowship differ by gender and race
CONCLUSION: There were demonstrated linguistic differences in LOR for GO fellowship based on applicant gender and race/ethnicity. LORs written for white, male applicants were more likely to have higher agentic scores compared to minority, female applicants. LORs written for female applicants were more likely to have higher communal scores. As LORs have been shown to be instrumental in GO fellowship interview selection and linguistic differences exist based on applicant gender and race/ethnicity, this study highlights the need for a more objective GO fellowship application process.DISCLOSURES: Portion of this paper was pres...

Impact of Postgraduate Second-Year Pharmacy Training (PGY2) on Clinical, Financial, and Educational Outcomes: A Scoping Review
CONCLUSION: Even though few studies evaluated the benefits of PGY2 pharmacy trainings, they showed to improve patient care, enhance involvement in teaching activities, and decrease financial burden for health-care systems. More studies should be done to reinforce the merits of such training.PMID:37597915 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajpe.2022.08.004

Air pollution, social engagement, and depression in older adults: Results from a Swedish population-based cohort study
Environ Pollut. 2023 Aug 17:122394. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2023.122394. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough emerging research has investigated the relationship between outdoor air pollution and depression risk in older adults, the results remain inconclusive. We aimed to determine the relationship between long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and depression among older adults and explore whether active social engagement may modify this association. At baseline (2001-2004), 2812 depression-free older adults from Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K) were included. SNAC-K is a longitudinal ...

Comorbidity and mortality in systemic sclerosis and matched controls: Impact of interstitial lung disease. A population based cohort study based on health registry data
CONCLUSION: The high prevalence of comorbidities in SSc had extensive impact on mortality. Mortality was increased in males, in young adults and in SSc-ILD, underlining the excess mortality associated with ILD. These findings emphasise the importance of timely diagnosis and optimal management of organ involvement and comorbidities in SSc.PMID:37596992 | PMC:PMC10440053 | DOI:10.1177/14799731231195041
