Using Robots and Artificial Intelligence to Search for New Medicines
Courtesy of Dr. Adam Gormley. Adam Gormley, Ph.D., describes himself as a creative and adventurous person—albeit, not creative in the traditional sense. “Science allows me to be creative; to me, it’s a form of art. I love being outdoors, going on sailing trips, and spending time adventuring with my family. Research is the same—it’s an adventure. My creative and adventurous sides have combined into a real love for science,” he says. Dr. Gormley currently channels his passion for science into his position as an assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. Lea...

Undisclosed Conflicts of Interest by Physicians Creating the CDC Opioid Prescribing Guidelines: Bad Faith or Incompetence?
We described above how changes in opioid policy aimed at reducing Washington State’s Medicaid and Workers Compensation costs contributed to an increase in methadone deaths between 2003 and late 2014 (23-25). Focusing on similar cost reductions, the Centers for Medicar e and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed rules for 2019 including several directives intended to reduce " Opioid Overutilization, ” including adoption of the “90 morphine milligram equivalent (MME) threshold cited by the 2016 CDC Opioid Guideline (147, 148). SHM 2022 Awards of Excellence and Junior Investigator Award
This study was the largest prospective investigation of pediatric pneumonia hospitalizations ever conducted in the U.S., and fundamentally altered how we think about pneumonia etiology in the era of highly effective pneumococcal vaccines. Currently, his research team is focused on the conduct of two National Institutes of Health-funded pragmatic randomized trials testing the effectiveness of predictive analytics and clinical decision support to optimize antibiotic utilization and inform disease-severity assessments in childhood pneumonia. In total, Dr. Williams has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications in top-t...

Association of Opioid Agonist Therapy With Lower Incidence of Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Young Adult Injection Drug Users
Conclusions and RelevanceIn this cohort of young adult injection drug users, recent maintenance opioid agonist therapy was associated with a lower incidence of HCV infection. Maintenance treatment with methadone or buprenorphine for opioid use disorders may be an important strategy to prevent the spread of HCV infection among young injection drug users.

SHM Advocates for Hospitalists and Their Patients
Advocacy, simply put, is the act of pleading or arguing in favor of something. It’s raising the concerns and voices of a group to efficiently influence decisions and affect change within political, economic, and social institutions. This is exactly what SHM has been doing on behalf of its members and their patients for decades.  Often the process and results of advocacy go unseen and seem to move at a snail’s pace. Regardless, SHM staff and volunteer clinician members of SHM’s public policy committee (PPC) constantly find effective ways to combat issues that negatively impact hospitalists’ ability to deliver high-...
