Effects of the multi-stress-resistant strain Zygosaccharomyces parabailii MC-5K3 bioaugmentation on microbial communities and metabolomics in tobacco waste extract
In this study, a specific selection strategy was used to successfully isolate multi-stress-resistant bacterial or fungal strains, that exhibited positive effects on cTWE fermentation, thereby improving the quality of final products. A potential strain Zygosaccharomyces parabailii MC-5K3 was used for the bioaugmentation of cTWE fermentation and it significantly influenced the microbial diversity of the fermented cTWE. Zygosaccharomyces was observed to be the only dominant fungal genus instead of some pathogenic bacterial genera, with an abundance of over 95% after four days, and still more than 80% after a week. Meanwhile, ...

Medical support of cessation for pregnant smokers
Orv Hetil. 2023 Jul 30;164(30):1194-1203. doi: 10.1556/650.2023.32771. Print 2023 Jul 30.ABSTRACTFemale smokers are most likely to quit using tobacco products during pregnancy. This period is an excellent chance for the health sector to achieve dual - maternal and fetal - health benefits with the professional support of the cessation attempt. In our review, we collected the practicalities of this specific cessation support. This review is based on publications available in the PubMed database as well as domestic and international guidelines and summaries, which were selected based on their practical importance. Quitting sm...

Tobacco Use and Tobacco Dependence Management
Clin Chest Med. 2023 Sep;44(3):479-488. doi: 10.1016/j.ccm.2023.03.004. Epub 2023 May 8.ABSTRACTTobacco use is a major public health problem and the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States and worldwide. Tobacco dependence determines tobacco use and is largely due to nicotine addiction. Such dependence is a disease resulting in a strong desire or compulsion to take tobacco, with difficulty in cessation of tobacco, along with persistent use despite overtly harmful consequences.PMID:37517828 | DOI:10.1016/j.ccm.2023.03.004

Depressive symptoms predict trajectories of electronic delivery nicotine systems, cigarette, and cannabis use across 4.5 years among college students
This study examined the role of depressive symptoms on trajectories of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), cigarette, and cannabis use across 4.5 years in a sample of college students aged 18-19 at the initial study wave.METHODS: Participants were 2,264 students enrolled in one of 24 Texas colleges that participated in a multi-wave study between 2014 and 2019. Latent growth mixture models were fit to identify longitudinal trajectories for past 30-day ENDS, cigarette, and cannabis use over a 4.5-year period. Class membership was regressed on baseline depressive symptoms in multinomial regression models.RESULTS: Fou...

Cross-sectional Use Patterns and Characteristics of Premium Versus Non-Premium Cigar Smokers in the United States, 2010-2019
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, premium cigar smoking is less prevalent than non-premium cigar smoking, especially among populations such as youth, racial/ethnic and sexual minorities, and low socioeconomic individuals. Premium cigar smokers tend to smoke infrequently and initiate cigars later in life compared with non-premium smokers. Study results can inform recommendations for regulating premium cigars.IMPLICATIONS: This study found that between 2010 and 2019, there are meaningful differences in the use patterns and characteristics of past-30-day premium versus non-premium cigar smokers in the United States. Premium cigars compri...

Association of Nicotine Cessation Time on the Incidence of Recurrent Incisional Hernia Repair and Postoperative Surgical Site Occurrences
CONCLUSION: Former nicotine users with less than 1 year of nicotine use cessation before surgery exhibited worse outcomes than those with more than a year of cessation or no prior use.PMID:37501283 | DOI:10.1177/00031348231192042

Varenicline enhances recognition memory via α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the medial prefrontal cortex in male mice
Neuropharmacology. 2023 Jul 26:109672. doi: 10.1016/j.neuropharm.2023.109672. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrevious studies postulated that chronic administration of varenicline, a partial and full agonist at α4β2 and α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), respectively, enhances recognition memory. However, whether its acute administration is effective, on which brain region(s) it acts, and in what signaling it is involved, remain unknown. To address these issues, we conducted a novel object recognition test using male C57BL/6J mice, focusing on the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a brain region associated wit...
