Africa, The Looted Continent
Mineral supply chains are often linked to child abuse, human trafficking, forced labour and other human rights violations. Credit: Tommy Trenchard/IPSBy Baher KamalMADRID, Oct 10 2022 (IPS) Africa. The birthplace of “Homo Sapiens.” The land of plenty. The origin of farming. The richest region in terms of natural resources. And human capital. Home to over 1.3 billion humans, continues to be looted. With 500 million plus people living in extreme poverty, Africa has also been transformed in a sort of grave for half of the world’s victims of terror. The continent is also the land with the highest suicide rate on Earth. W...

A Probabilistic-Deterministic Approach Towards Human Health Risk Assessment and Source Apportionment of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) in Some Contaminated Fish Species
This study identified children are exposed to As and Zn as their estimated targeted hazard quotient (THQ) value exceeded the threshold limit of safety, whereas adults are exposed to As only. The estimated, hazard index (HI) for children was found more than four times of adults; however, both the population groups are in vulnerable situation considering HI value (HI > 1), indicating possible non-carcinogenic health risk. Moreover, cumulative cancer risk TCR appraised that all the fish species exceeded the threshold limit of > 1E-03 for children and > 1E-04 for adults, which are level VII and level V contamination s...

Lithium for acute mania.
CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review indicates that lithium is more effective than placebo as a treatment for acute mania but increases the risk for somnolence and tremor. Limited evidence suggests little or no difference between lithium and other mood stabilisers (valproate, carbamazepine) or antipsychotics (risperidone, quetiapine, haloperidol). Olanzapine may be an exception, as it is probably slightly more effective than lithium. There is uncertain evidence that risperidone may also be more effective than lithium. Lithium is probably more effective at treating acute mania than topiramate. When compared to placebo, lithi...

Metal-free materials for fixed prosthodontic restorations.
CONCLUSIONS: There is insufficient evidence to support or refute the effectiveness of metal-free materials for fixed prosthodontic treatment over metal-ceramic or other type of standard restorations. The overall quality of existing evidence was very low, therefore great caution should be exercised when generalising the results of the included trials. Until more evidence becomes available clinicians should continue to base decisions on which material to use for fixed prosthodontic treatment on their own clinical experience, whilst taking into consideration the individual circumstances and preferences of their patients. Ther...

Aripiprazole alone or in combination for acute mania.
CONCLUSIONS: Aripiprazole is an effective treatment for mania in a population that includes adults, children and adolescents, although its use leads to gastrointestinal disturbances and movement disorders. Comparative trials with medicines other than haloperidol and lithium are few, so the precise place of aripiprazole in therapy remains unclear. PMID: 24346956 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
