The benefit of metformin in the treatment of pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Conclusion: According to the data of this meta-analysis, treatment with metformin failed to statistically improve liver enzymes but may be beneficial in the improvement of lipid parameters and insulin metabolism regulation in pediatric patients with NAFLD. As there are not enough available studies in the literature, the influence of metformin on liver ultrasonography or histology in pediatric NAFLD should be further analyzed in future studies. What is Known:• Lifestyle modification with weight loss through physical activity and dietary modification is the recommended treatment option for pediatric NAFLD.• Metformin may ...

Liver Fat Storage Is a Better Predictor of Coronary Artery Disease than Visceral Fat
This study measured associations among visceral fat storage, fatty liver, insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, and CAD. Patients were divided into three groups: excess visceral fat (visceral fat area >330 ± 99 cm2), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and a control group. The definition of fatty liver is liver minus spleen density greater than or equal to -10. We defined early atherosclerosis as intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery >7 mm in men and >0.65 mm in women, measured with Doppler ultrasound. Visceral fat area was defined using CT (>330 ± 99 cm2). Insulin-resistance biomarkers (H...

The triglyceride-glucose index is associated with atherosclerosis in patients with symptomatic coronary artery disease, regardless of diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidaemia
CONCLUSION: The TyG index is a useful marker for predicting coronary and carotid atherosclerosis in patients with symptomatic CAD, regardless of diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidaemia. The TyG index is of higher value for the identification of both coronary and carotid atherosclerotic plaques than the FBG or TG level alone.PMID:37620954 | DOI:10.1186/s12933-023-01919-z

Arterial stiffness but not carotid intima-media thickness progression precedes premature structural and functional cardiac damage in youth: A 7-year temporal and mediation longitudinal study
CONCLUSIONS: Arterial stiffness progression temporally preceded worsening structural and functional cardiac damage in youth with increased systolic blood pressure and insulin resistance partly mediating the relationships. Future interventions aimed at attenuating premature cardiac damage in adolescents and young adults may consider a simultaneous treatment of both arterial stiffness, elevated blood pressure and insulin resistance.PMID:37582328 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2023.117197

Comparing MitoQ10 and heat therapy: Evaluating mechanisms and therapeutic potential for polycystic ovary syndrome induced by circadian rhythm disruption
In conclusion, MitoQ10 supplementation and HTT demonstrated the potential for ameliorating metabolic, reproductive, and structural perturbations associated with PCOS induced by circadian rhythm disruption. These findings suggest a potential therapeutic role for these interventions in managing PCOS in women.PMID:37548004 | DOI:10.1080/07420528.2023.2241902

ER stress aggravates diaphragm weakness through activating PERK/JNK signaling in obesity hypoventilation syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that ectopic lipid deposition impairs the diaphragmatic function of people with obesity. Activation of PERK/JNK signaling is involved in the pathogenesis of lipotoxicity-induced diaphragm weakness in obesity hypoventilation syndrome.PMID:37475688 | DOI:10.1002/oby.23809

Serum Levels of Activin A: Predictor of Insulin Resistance and Atherosclerosis in Prediabetics
Conclusion: A substantial proportion of morbidity and mortality related to dysglycemic states can be attributed to cardiovascular complications. Elevated levels of activin A in prediabetes can act as an indicator of subclinical CVD leading to early diagnosis and intervention.PMID:37354506 | DOI:10.5005/japi-11001-0211

Association of skin autofluorescence and carotid intima-media thickness in acromegaly patients
CONCLUSIONS: Our study is the first to examine the relationship between SAF and CIMT in acromegaly patients. We found higher CIMT and enhanced SAF in the acromegaly group compared to the control group with a significant positive correlation in between. The presence of acromegaly was related to increased SAF levels and CIMT. SAF was associated with CIMT in acromegaly patients. Implementation of CIMT and SAF evaluation in this clinical setting may improve cardiovascular complications, particularly in the PTCOE.PMID:37326572 | DOI:10.23736/S2724-6507.23.03951-9

Fetal growth trajectories and measures of insulin resistance in young adults
CONCLUSIONS: Restricted fetal head and abdominal circumference from early pregnancy associate with higher relative insulin resistance in the offspring during adulthood. These data strengthen our understanding of the importance of the intrauterine environment and its effect on the risk of predisposition to adult diabetes and related metabolic disorders.PMID:37246587 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad292
