An Update on the Management of Childhood-Onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Paediatr Drugs. 2021 Jul;23(4):331-347. doi: 10.1007/s40272-021-00457-z. Epub 2021 Jul 10.ABSTRACTChildhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a prototype of a multisystemic, inflammatory, heterogeneous autoimmune condition. This disease is characterized by simultaneous or sequential organ and system involvement, with unpredictable flare and high levels of morbidity and mortality. Racial/ethnic background, socioeconomic status, cost of medications, difficulty accessing health care, and poor adherence seem to impact lupus outcomes and treatment response. In this article, the management of cSLE patients is updated....

Lupus, vaccinations and COVID-19: What we know now
Lupus. 2021 Jun 17:9612033211024355. doi: 10.1177/09612033211024355. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSevere acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus causing Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has had a huge impact on health services, with a high mortality associated with complications including pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are at increased risk of viral infections, and recent data suggests they may be at an increased risk of poor outcomes with COVID-19. This may be particularly true for those on rituximab or high dose steroids. A...

First report of a de novo iTTP episode associated with an mRNA-based anti-COVID-19 vaccination
We report a case of a 38-year old woman with a de novo iTTP after exposure to the mRNA-based anti-COVID-19 vaccine produced by Pfizer-BioNTech. She presented with increased bruising and petechiae, starting 2 weeks after receiving the first dose of the anti-COVID-19 vaccine. Laboratory data revealed a severe ADAMTS13-deficiency in combination with a very high autoantibody titer against ADAMTS13. She was successfully treated with plasma exchange, corticosteroids, rituximab and Caplacizumab. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of iTTP post mRNA-based COVID-19-vaccination in a previously TTP-naïve patient.PMID:341...

COVID-19 Vaccination in Patients with Autoimmune Inflammatory Rheumatic Diseases: Clinical Guidance of the Korean College of Rheumatology
J Korean Med Sci. 2021 Mar 29;36(12):e95. doi: 10.3346/jkms.2021.36.e95.ABSTRACTThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused more than 100 million infections and 2 million deaths worldwide. In up to 20% of cases, COVID-19 infection can take a severe, life-threatening course. Therefore, preventive measures such as mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and social distancing are important. COVID-19 vaccines that use novel vaccine technology can prevent up to 95% of infections. However, the uncertainty regarding the efficacy and safety of vaccination in patients with autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic disease (AIIRD), who ...
