Interventions for preventing ophthalmia neonatorum.
CONCLUSIONS: There are no data on whether prophylaxis for ophthalmia neonatorum prevents serious outcomes such as blindness or any adverse visual outcome. Moderate-certainty evidence suggests that the use of prophylaxis may lead to a reduction in the incidence of ACAE in newborns but the evidence for effect on GC, CC or BC was less certain. Comparison of individual interventions did not suggest any consistently superior intervention, but data were limited. A trial comparing tetracycline, povidone-iodine (single administration), and chloramphenicol for GC and CC could potentially provide the community with an effective,...

Prophylactic antibiotics for adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a network meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: This NMA evaluated the safety and efficacy of different antibiotics used prophylactically for COPD patients. Compared to placebo, prolonged administration of macrolides (ranked first) appeared beneficial in prolonging the time to next exacerbation, improving quality of life, and reducing serious adverse events. No clear benefits were associated with use of quinolones or tetracyclines. In addition, antibiotic resistance was a concern and could not be thoroughly assessed in this review. Given the trade-off between effectiveness, safety, and risk of antibiotic resistance, prophylactic administration of antibiotic...

In conclusion, the national prevalence of dementia and MCI in 2016 found in this cross-sectional study was similar to that of other US-based studies. Clearing Microglia Reverses Age-Related Disruption of Sleeping Patterns in Mice https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2022/11/clearing-microglia-reverses-age-related-disruption-of-sleeping-patterns-in-mice/ Microglia are innate immune cells of the central nervous system. They are analogous to macrophages in the rest of the body, but undertake additional duties relating to the function of neurons and in brain tissue. Microglia become overly active and inflamma...

Clinical and histological features and treatment outcomes of patients with Morbihan disease: a systematic review
AbstractMorbihan disease (MD) is considered a rare complication of rosacea, which is difficult to diagnose and challenging to treat. Here, we performed a systematic review of available case reports and case series to summarize key clinical and pathologic features of and successful treatment regimens for MD. We conducted a search of the PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane electronic databases from their inception to the date of search on March 6, 2023. We found that MD affects patients in the fifth decade of life on average, more commonly reported in male than female (69% vs 31%). Clinically, MD affects the eyelids, cheeks...

Prevalence and Antimicrobial-Resistant Features of < em > Shigella < /em > Species in East Africa from 2015-2022: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: The pooled estimate indicates high burden of Shigella infection in East Africa, as well as a high proportion of drug resistance pattern to tetracycline, ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and amoxicillin. Therefore, initiating and scale-up of performing drug susceptibility test for each shigellosis case need to be considered and strengthened.PMID:37692062 | PMC:PMC10492654 | DOI:10.1155/2023/8277976

Phylogeny, Biofilm Production, and Antimicrobial Properties of Fecal Microbial Communities of Adi Tribes of Arunachal Pradesh, India
This study aimed to analyze the ethnic tribe's biofilm producing antibiotic resistant bacteria and their phyllogenetic analysis in 15 stool samples collected from Adi tribes of Arunachal Pradesh. Of the analyzed samples, 42.85% were Escherichia, 20% lactic acid bacteria, 20% Salmonella, and 17.14% Enterococcus. Escherichia coli, lactic acid bacteria, and Enterococcus sp. emerged as strong biofilm producers; however, Salmonella declined to exhibit characters for a strong biofilm producer. Tetracycline resistance dominated in all the gut bacterial profiles. The 16SrRNA amplified PCR product was used for sequencing, and a phy...
