Metformin and Aspirin: Anticancer effects on A549 and PC3 cancer cells and the mechanisms of action
This study aims to investigate the effect of metformin and aspirin and their combination of them on A549 and PC3 cell lines. Metformin and aspirin were investigated separately and in combination on two cancer cell lines, A549 and PC3. The examined groups include the negative control of untreated cells and the positive control of cisplatin and drugs at concentrations of 15, 10, and 20 μg/ mL to investigate the mechanism of oxidative stress factors (reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation, Glutathione (GSH)) and apoptosis (lactate dehydrogenase). The results showed that aspirin, metformin, and their combination could af...

Data Democracy! ‘Dr. Google’ (2023) Vs. ‘Every Man His Own Physician’ (1767)
BY MICHAEL MILLENSON In the 18th-century, a pre-Google guide offered democratization of medical information In 1767, as American colonists’ protestations against “taxation without representation” intensified, a Boston publisher reprinted a book by a British doctor seemingly tailor-made for the growing spirit of independence. Talk about “democratization of health care information,” “participatory medicine” and “health citizens”! Every Man His Own Physician, by Dr. John Theobald, bore an impressive subtitle: Being a complete collection of efficacious and approved remedies for every disease...

Predictors of residual disease after debulking surgery in advanced stage ovarian cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Addition of ovarian tumor tissue markers to our multivariable prediction models based on epidemiologic/clinical data slightly improved the model performance, suggesting debulking status may be in part driven by tumor characteristics. Larger studies are warranted to identify those at high risk of poor surgical outcomes informing personalized treatment.PMID:36761962 | PMC:PMC9902593 | DOI:10.3389/fonc.2023.1090092

"Vitreous Hemorrhage and Long-Lasting Priapism After COVID-19 m-RNA Based Vaccine: A Case Report"
CONCLUSIONS: Due to the several predisposing factors such as diabetes, aspirin assumption, history of blood dyscrasia and infectious retinitis, the relationship between the acute intraocular bleeding and the BNT162b2 inoculation remains difficult to ascertain in this patient. However, the occurrence of lasting priapism and vitreous hemorrhage within 24 h from the vaccination is a critical event which deserves to be mentioned.PMID:35505605 | DOI:10.1177/11206721221098880

Role of Combination Treatment of Aspirin and Zinc in DMH-DSS-induced Colon Inflammation, Oxidative Stress and Tumour Progression in Male BALB/c Mice
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2022 Apr 19. doi: 10.1007/s12011-022-03241-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTColitis-associated colorectal cancer serves as a prototype of inflammation-associated cancers which is linked with repeated cycles of inflammation and DNA repair deficits. Several preclinical and clinical data reported that aspirin has a chemo-preventive effect in colorectal cancer and is associated with dose-dependent side effects. Furthermore, it has been reported that zinc supplementation improves the quality of life in patients undergoing chemotherapy by alteration of colonic cancer cell gene expression. However, explicatio...

Integrative Management of Pancreatic Cancer (PDAC): Emerging Complementary Agents and Modalities
Nutr Cancer. 2021 Jun 4:1-24. doi: 10.1080/01635581.2021.1934043. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a devastating disease. The standard first-line treatment for PDAC is gemcitabine chemotherapy which, unfortunately, offers only limited chance of a lasting cure. This review further evaluates the hypothesis that the effectiveness of gemcitabine can be improved by combining it with evidence-based complementary measures. Previously, supported by clinical trial data, we suggested that a number of dietary factors and nutraceuticals can be integrated with gemcitabine therapy. Here, we evalua...
