Fabrication of 1-octane sulphonic acid modified nanoporous graphene with tuned hydrophilicity for decontamination of industrial wastewater from organic and inorganic contaminants
RSC Adv. 2023 Jul 20;13(32):21926-21944. doi: 10.1039/d3ra02602g. eCollection 2023 Jul 19.ABSTRACTThis research work is based on the fabrication of a graphene oxide-based composite (GOBC) to remove the maximum number of contaminants from different industrial effluents. The GO was first intercalated with 1-octanesulphonic acid sodium salt and subjected to microwave irradiation to produce GOBC. Fixed-bed column tests and Jar-tests were performed for removal of the most harmful endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) such as bisphenol A, bisphenol S, endosulphan, beta-estradiol, dyes (methylene blue and violate) and toxic metal...

Estradiol protects female mice from hyperuricemia induced by PCB138 exposure
Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2023 Jun 2;261:115093. doi: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115093. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPolychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a type of persistent organic pollutant (POP). Our previous study demonstrated that exposure to 0.5-50 μg/kg bw PCB138 during postnatal days (PND) 3-21 led to elevated serum uric acid (UA) levels and kidney injury in adult male mice. Given that the prevalence of hyperuricemia (HUA) is significantly lower in women than in men, it is worth investigating whether POP-induced HUA and its secondary kidney injury have sexual dimorphism. Herein, we exposed female mice to 0.5-50 μg/kg...

Validation of an isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) measurement procedure for the reliable quantification of steroid hormones in waters
Anal Bioanal Chem. 2023 Apr 29. doi: 10.1007/s00216-023-04698-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTReliable data are compulsory to efficiently monitor pollutants in aquatic environments, particularly steroid hormones that can exert harmful effects at challenging analytical levels below the ng L-1. An isotope dilution two-step solid-phase extraction followed by an ultra-performance liquid chromatography separation coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) detection method was validated for the quantification of 21 steroid hormones (androgens, estrogens, glucocorticoids, and progestogens) in whole waters. To achieve a rea...

Manganese redox cycling in immobilized bioreactors for simultaneous removal of nitrate and 17 β-estradiol: Performance, mechanisms and community assembly potential
In this study, Mn-reducing strain MFG10 and Mn-oxidizing strain MFQ7 synergistically removed 94.67% of 17β-estradiol (E2) within 12 h. Analysis of potential variations in Mn oxides suggested that MCS accelerated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Mn(III), which interacted to promote E2 removal. After continuous operation of the Mn ore-based immobilized bioreactor for 270 days, the experimental group (EG) achieved average removal efficiencies of 89.63% and 97.57% for NO3--N and E2, respectively. High-throughput sequencing results revealed complex symbiotic relationships in EG. Community assembly significan...

(Anti)estrogenic activity impacted by complex environmental matrices: A DOM and multiphase distribution approach
In conclusion, the in vitro YES assay is subjected to factors intrinsic to the environmental sample that can influence on the measured estrogenic response. Therefore, results interpretation should be performed together with organic matter characterization parameters, cytotoxicity and antiestrogenic activity evaluation.PMID:36272630 | DOI:10.1016/j.chemosphere.2022.136917

Natural colloids facilitated transport of steroidal estrogens in saturated porous media: Mechanism and processes
Environ Pollut. 2022 Oct 7:120315. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2022.120315. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSteroid estrogens (SEs) as typical endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are widely detected in terrestrial environment, whilst the transport of SEs in groundwater remains unwell understood. Specifically, the effects of ubiquitous natural colloids on the SEs transport are unclear in subsurface environment, especially in aquifer systems. Here, the influence of inorganic colloids (i.e. silica and illite) and organic colloids, i.e. Humic acid (HA), on the transport of estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2) in saturated porous media wa...
