Topical versus systemic antibiotics for chronic suppurative otitis media.
CONCLUSIONS: There was a limited amount of low-quality evidence available, from studies completed over 15 years ago, to examine whether topical or systemic antibiotics are more effective in achieving resolution of ear discharge for people with CSOM. However, amongst this uncertainty there is some evidence to suggest that the topical administration of antibiotics may be more effective than systemic administration of antibiotics in achieving resolution of ear discharge (dry ear). There is limited evidence available regarding different types of antibiotics. It is not possible to determine with any certainty whether or not top...

Adult gonococcal conjunctivitis: Prevalence, clinical features and complications
Conclusion. AGC is a rare disease which is difficult to diagnose as it requires a high index of suspicion to prevent corneal perforation but in an important number of cases it may mimic orbital cellulitis. It is crucial that treatment starts as soon as possible to avoid serious corneal damage. Patients should promptly receive complete and correct treatment when admitted to the emergency room since an elevated number of patients do not attend their medical follow-up visit. Azithromycin or aminoglycoside eye drops are probably the best option to complete the treatment, due to high quinolone resistance.PMID:34494952 | DOI:10.1099/jmm.0.001416

The polyamino-isoprenyl potentiator NV716 revives disused antibiotics against Gram-negative bacteria in broth, infected monocytes, or biofilms, by disturbing the barrier effect of their outer membrane
Eur J Med Chem. 2022 May 27;238:114496. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmech.2022.114496. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPotentiators can improve antibiotic activity against difficult-to-treat Gram-negative bacteria like Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae or Acinetobacter baumannii. They represent an appealing strategy in view of the paucity of therapeutic alternatives in case of multidrug resistance. Here, we examine the ability of the polyamino-isoprenyl compound NV716 to restore the activity of a series of disused antibiotics (rifampicin, azithromycin, linezolid, fusidic acid, novobiocin, chloramphenicol, and doxycycline, plus cip...

A Middle East systematic review and meta-analysis of prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility pattern in MRSA Staphylococcus aureus isolated from patients with cystic fibrosis
CONCLUSION: Regarding a quite prevalence of S. aureus and an intermediate prevalence of MRSA in CF patients, preventive measures and health policies should be implemented in the Middle East area to prevent the spread of infections caused by MRSA strains in CF patients.PMID:35765068 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-022-00305-x

Progress of Research on the Application of Triple Antibiotic Paste and Hydrogel Scaffold Materials in Endodontic Revascularization: A Systematic Review
Conclusion. Hydrogels regulate stem cell fates, modulate growth factor release, and encapsulate antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drugs. The triple antibiotic paste is composed of metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, and minocycline, which exhibits promising antibacterial effects and duration at appropriate concentrations, with low cytotoxicity, and effectively promotes the preservation and regeneration of pulp tissues and the formation of dental hard tissues. However, issues such as tooth discoloration and bacterial drug resistance also exist. The present article reviews the progress of research on the application of hydrogel ...

A typical presentation of moxifloxacin-induced DRESS syndrome with pulmonary involvement: a case report and review of the literature
CONCLUSION: This is a rare reported case of DRESS syndrome with pulmonary involvement induced by moxifloxacin. Prompt recognition and correct diagnosis can promote appropriate treatment and accelerate recovery. This case is important for us as a reference in the differential diagnosis of DRESS syndrome and helps us further understand the mechanism of DRESS syndrome.PMID:35854287 | DOI:10.1186/s12890-022-02064-1

Treatment of enteric fever (typhoid and paratyphoid fever) with cephalosporins
CONCLUSIONS: Based on very low- to low-certainty evidence, ceftriaxone is an effective treatment for adults and children with enteric fever, with few adverse effects. Trials suggest that there may be no difference in the performance of ceftriaxone compared with azithromycin, fluoroquinolones, or chloramphenicol. Cefixime can also be used for treatment of enteric fever but may not perform as well as fluoroquinolones. We are unable to draw firm general conclusions on comparative contemporary effectiveness given that most trials were small and conducted over 20 years previously. Clinicians need to take into account current, l...

Occurrence of endocrine disruptors in Malaysia's water systems: A scoping review
This report aims to describe the occurrence of EDCs and their locations. Literature search was conducted electronically in two databases (PubMed and Scopus). A total of 41 peer-reviewed articles published between January 2000 and May 2021 were selected. Most of the articles dealt with pharmaceuticals (16), followed by pesticides (7), hormones (7), mixed species (7), and plasticisers (4). Most studies (40/41) were conducted in Peninsular Malaysia, with 60.9% in the central region and almost half (48.8%) in the Selangor State. Only one study was conducted in the northern region and East Malaysia. The Langat River, the Klang ...

Genomic analyses of drug-resistant Salmonella enterica serovar Heidelberg strains isolated from meat and related sources between 2013 and 2017 in the south region of Brazil
In conclusion, the presence of multidrug-resistant S. Heidelberg strains in Brazil showing a global genomic relationship may alert for the necessity of stronger surveillance measures by food safety and public health authorities to limit its spread to humans and animals through foods.PMID:36920496 | DOI:10.1007/s00294-023-01264-4
