The G protein-coupled receptor COLD1 promotes chilling tolerance in maize during germination
In this study, a chilling-tolerance gene in maize, ZmCOLD1, was cloned and characterized. This gene encodes a G protein-coupled receptor that is localized to the plasma membrane and the endoplasmic reticulum. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in ZmCOLD1, SNP2738, was found to confer chilling tolerance and to have promoted maize adaptations during speciation from teosinte. Overexpression of the excellent haplotype ZmCOLD1Hap11 significantly enhanced chilling tolerance, whereas knocking down ZmCOLD1 increased sensitivity to low temperatures during the germination and seedling stages. ZmCOLD1 was associated with an influ...

Oxidized of chitosan with different molecular weights for potential antifungal and plant growth regulator applications
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 11:126862. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126862. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe application of Chitosan (CS) in drug delivery systems, plant growth promotion, antibacterial potentiality and plant defense is significantly limited by its inability to dissolve in neutral solutions. In this work, CS with different molecular weights (Mw) has been oxidized, yielding five kinds of oxidized chitosan (OCS 1-5) with solubilities in neutral solutions. The results obtained from Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy clearly showed the successful oxidation of the hydroxyl group to form aldehyde and carb...

Synthesis of Some Benzothiazole Derivatives Based on 3-hydroxypyridine-4-one and Benzaldehyde  and Evaluation of their β-amyloid Aggregation Inhibition using both Experimental Methods and Molecular Dynamic Simulation
Chem Biodivers. 2023 Sep 10:e202301113. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202301113. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSome novel inhibitors based on the (benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-1-phenylmethanimine derivatives were designed to reduce the aggregation process in Alzheimer's disease. These structures seem to mimic stilbene-like scaffold, while the benzothiazole moiety "locks" the thioflavin T binding site. Other inhibitors were designed based on 2-((benzo[d]thiazol-2-ylimino)methyl)-5-(benzyloxy)-1-methylpyridin-4(H)-one derivatives. Benzo[d]thiazol-2-amine derivatives were prepared by the reaction of aniline derivatives with ammonium thiocyanate...

Novel cellulose derivative containing amino phenyl acetic acid as sustainable adsorbent for removal of cationic and anionic dyes
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 2:126687. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126687. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe synthesis and characterization of a novel cellulose derivative as a potential sustainable adsorbent for cationic and anionic dyes are described through processing in ionic liquids. Cellulose was solubilized in ionic liquid with tosyl chloride to form tosyl cellulose which reacted with 4-amino phenyl acetic acid through nucleophilic substitution mechanism. The new cellulose derivative was characterized and explored as an effective adsorbent for methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) removal, and the adsorption ...

Anti-nociceptive and Anti-inflammatory Activities of Visnagin in Different Nociceptive and Inflammatory Mice Models
This study intends to explore the potential to treat pain by inhibiting nociception and inflammation with a safer, non-addictive, effective, and low-cost alternative agent from a natural source, visnagin. In vivo studies have been conducted using male Swiss albino mice as models for this research. Nociception was induced using different chemical and thermal stimuli such as acetic acid, glutamate, capsaicin, and formalin. To check for the anti-inflammatory properties, carrageenan was used to induce inflammation and the activity was assayed using peritoneal cavity leukocyte infiltration analysis and pro-inflammatory cytokine...

Weissella koreensis and Pediococcus pentosaceus bacterial ghosts induce inflammatory responses as immunostimulants
In this study, bacterial ghosts (BGs) were generated from Weissella koreensis LKS42 (WKorGs) and Pediococcus pentosacues KA94 (PPGs) by chemically inducing lysis using substances such as hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), nitric acid (HNO3), acetic acid (CH3COOH), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), n-butanol, and C6H8O7. HCl-induced WKorGs and PPGs exhibited complete removal of DNA and displayed transverse membrane dissolution tunnel structures under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cell viability assays showed high viability of RAW 264.7 cells exposed to HCl-indu...

Malus baccata (Linn.) Borkh polyphenols-loaded nanoparticles ameliorate intestinal health by modulating intestinal function and gut microbiota
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 11:126233. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126233. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to construct the nanoparticles based on Hohenbuehelia serotina polysaccharides and mucin for encapsulation of the polyphenols from Malus baccata (Linn.) Borkh (MBP-MC-HSP NPs), and investigate their effects on intestinal function and gut microbiota in mice. The results showed that MBP-MC-HSP NPs did not have any toxic and side effect by determining organ indexes and hematological parameters. The colonic index, colonic length as well as colonic histology were significantly improved by treatme...

Citrus honeys from three different regions of Turkey: HPLC-DAD profiling and in vitro enzyme inhibition, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties with chemometric study
The objectives of the present study are to compare the phenolic profiles and biological activities of 15 citrus honey samples from three different locations in Turkey using a chemometric approach. The HPLC-DAD analysis was used to determine phenolic profiles. Nineteen phenolic compounds were identified. Gallic acid (107.14-717.04 μg/g) was recorded as the predominant compound. AF (Antalya-Finike) had the highest antioxidant activity in ABTS•+ (IC50: 18.01±0.69 mg/mL), metal chelating (IC50: 6.20±0.19 mg/mL) and CUPRAC (A0.50: 12.05±0.68 mg/mL) assays, while it revealed the best anti-inflammatory activity against COX-...

Effects of deacetylation degree of chitosan on the structure of aerogels
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 3:126123. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126123. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChitosan aerogels, obtained by (supercritical) CO2 drying of hydrogels, are novel adsorbents because of their large surface area and high porosity. Intrinsic properties of chitosan such as molecular weight (MW) and degree of deacetylation (DDA) had large impacts on the characteristics of chitosan aerogels. Although there are a few studies about the effects of solely DDA or MW on aerogel structure, none of them has focused on the mutual effects. The study aims to investigate the combined effects of MW and DDA of chitos...
