Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) approach for patients with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: a comparative study between four ERCP techniques with proposed management algorithm
CONCLUSION: Procedure success was similar between GAE, RGA, and EDGE, but superior to BAE. AE rates were similar between approaches.PMID:37690929 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.08.005

Proteomic-based electrochemical non-invasive biosensor for early breast cancer diagnosis
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 2:126681. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126681. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBreast cancer is the second highest cause of cancer-related mortality in women worldwide and in the United States, accounting for around 571,000 deaths per year. Early detection of breast cancer increases treatment results and the possibility of a cure. While existing diagnostic modalities such as mammography, ultrasound, and biopsy exist, some are prohibitively expensive, uncomfortable, time-consuming, and have limited sensitivity, necessitating the development of a cost-effective, rapid, and highly sensitive approac...

Thyroid Nodules: Emerging trends in Detection and Visualization based on Citespace
CONCLUSION: Based on the current trends, the number of publications on TN will continue to increase. The United States is the most active contributor to research in this field. Previous literature focused on stratification, cancer, surgery, and ablation, and there were different opinions on the stratification of diagnosis. There were relatively few studies on pathogenesis and treatment using medicine. More focus will be placed on association guidelines, radiofrequency ablation, classification, and data system, which may be the next popular topics in TNs research.PMID:37608676 | DOI:10.2174/1871530323666230822143549

Ultrasound-guided pleural biopsy following a non-diagnostic thoracentesis for non-small cell lung cancer
We report a case of a 65-year-old man with a cavitary lung mass and parietal-based pleural nodules in which a pleural ultrasound-guided approach yielded a definitive diagnosis of stage IV non-small cell lung carcinoma. Computed tomography-guided biopsy is often preferred approach for the majority of United States hospitals for sampling pleural nodules as compared to US. The advantages of an US-guided approach include [1]: increased portability [2]; decreased procedure time [3]; reduced reliance on dedicated ancillary support staff [4]; need for local anesthesia only [5]; lack of ionizing radiation exposure; and [6] cost re...

Sleep Duration Is Associated With Subclinical Carotid Plaque Burden
CONCLUSIONS: The association between long sleep and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis may explain prior associations between long sleep and stroke.PMID:37470161 | DOI:10.1161/STROKEAHA.122.041967

Novel use of ultrasound-guided transgluteal sciatic nerve block to treat severe herpes zoster pain along the S1 dermatome
Am J Emerg Med. 2023 May 23:S0735-6757(23)00257-7. doi: 10.1016/j.ajem.2023.05.014. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPatients presenting with herpes zoster (HZ) to emergency departments (EDs) across the United States represent a significant number of visits and have pain that is difficult to manage, sometimes even requiring opioid medications for adequate analgesia. Ultrasound-guided nerve blocks (UGNBs) are becoming more integrated into the ED physician's tool box for a multimodal approach to analgesia in various indications. Here we describe a novel use of the transgluteal sciatic UGNB for treatment of HZ pain along the S1 ...

Research Trends on Digital Flexor Tendon: A Bibliometric Analysis Based on CiteSpace
CONCLUSION: This study recommends that international cooperation and linkages among authors, countries and institutions should be strengthened. Ultrasound, tenosynovitis, platelet-rich plasma, and 3-loop pulley suture have been the focus of current research. The surgical and non-surgical treatment of digital flexor tendon injury would be future frontiers.PMID:37149002 | DOI:10.1016/j.hansur.2023.05.001

Wall shear rate and energy loss coefficient measures using conventional Doppler ultrasound do not predict carotid plaque progression
Conclusions: Although it is a widely accepted hypothesis that shear stress and hemodynamics of the carotid bifurcation contribute to plaque progression, we found that WSR and ELC estimated by Doppler ultrasound do not reliably predict atherosclerotic plaque progression in the carotid artery. Other ultrasound modalities, such as 3D imaging, may be used to assess the influence of plaque geometry and hemodynamics in plaque progression.PMID:37128732 | DOI:10.1024/0301-1526/a001075
