Prevalence and outcomes of atrial fibrillation in a European healthcare area gained through the processing of a health information technology system
ConclusionsIn this study, we report for the first time the true prevalence of diagnosed AF and its clinical characteristics, treatment and prognosis in a Spanish healthcare area, based on the systematic integration of data available from a universally adopted health IT system within the region.

The Mediterranean Diet and Cardiovascular Health.
Abstract The Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), abundant in minimally processed plant-based foods, rich in monounsaturated fat from olive oil, but lower in saturated fat, meats, and dairy products, seems an ideal nutritional model for cardiovascular health. Methodological aspects of Mediterranean intervention trials, limitations in the quality of some meta-analyses, and other issues may have raised recent controversies. It remains unclear whether such limitations are important enough as to attenuate the postulated cardiovascular benefits of the MedDiet. We aimed to critically review current evidence on the role of the ...

Prevalence and Significance of Interatrial Block in Takotsubo Syndrome (From the RETAKO Registry)
Interatrial block (IAB) represents a conduction delay between right and left atria and is associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation and stroke. IAB has not been previously assessed in patients with Takotsubo syndrome (TS). Our aim was to describe the prevalence and prognostic significance of IAB in patients with TS. Data come from the Spanish National prospective registry of patients with definitive TS diagnosis. IAB was defined as a P-wave ≥ 120 milliseconds and was considered partial when the P-wave was positive in inferior leads and advanced when it was biphasic (+/-).

Cardiovascular Incomes In The Hypertensive And Diabetic Mediterranean Population Older Than 65 Years Old
Background and Aims: In Spain, hypertension and DM are major health problems. The importance of determining the CV risk associated with both is based on the evidence of simultaneous CV risk factors potentiate each other, giving rise to a total CV risk that is greater than the sum of its components. Our objective was to study the income from coronary heart disease, heart failure or stroke produced in these patients during follow-up.

Impact of Life's Simple 7 on the incidence of major cardiovascular events in high-risk Spanish adults in the PREDIMED study cohort
ConclusionsIn an elderly Spanish population at high cardiovascular risk, better adherence to Life's Simple 7 metrics was progressively associated with a substantially lower rate of major cardiovascular events.

Hyperkalemia in heart failure patients in Spain and its impact on guidelines and recommendations: ESC-EORP-HFA Heart Failure Long-Term Registry
ConclusionsThis study highlights the magnitude of the problem of hyperkalemia in patients with heart failure in everyday clinical practice and the need to improve monitoring of this factor in these patients due to its interference with the possibility of receiving optimal treatment.

Leukotriene receptor antagonists role in recuding the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risk: A case-control study in southern Spain
Background and Aims: Leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs) are used in asthmatic patients, however different studies indicate that LTRAs can decrease intimal hyperplasia after vascular injury, and have a protective role in cerebral ischemia. The aim of our study was to assess the role of LTRAs in reducing myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemic stroke (IS) risk in patients from two Primary Health Care Centers of Granada.

The association between self-perceived walking pace with the incidence of hypertension: the ‘Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra’ cohort
Conclusion: Our results support that an increase in walking pace, even slightly, is inversely associated with the development of hypertension, independent of total time spent walking and other factors associated with hypertension.

Long-Term Variation in Kidney Function and Its Impact After Acute Myocardial Infarction
Kidney disease (KD) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is associated with major cardiovascular events (MACE). We sought to compare the long-term variation in KD in patients with AMI versus controls and its value as a risk factor for MACE in patients with AMI. A cohort of 300 outpatients with AMI, recruited between 2014 and 2016 in Barcelona, Spain, were compared with a control cohort matched 1:1 based on age and several risk factors for developing KD. Annual estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using MDRD-4 formula and albuminuria were collected and patients were followed up for the occurrence of MAC...

Long-term secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease with a Mediterranean diet and a low-fat diet (CORDIOPREV): a randomised controlled trial
This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT00924937.FINDINGS: From Oct 1, 2009, to Feb 28, 2012, a total of 1002 patients were enrolled, 500 (49·9%) in the low-fat diet group and 502 (50·1%) in the Mediterranean diet group. The mean age was 59·5 years (SD 8·7) and 827 (82·5%) of 1002 patients were men. The primary endpoint occurred in 198 participants: 87 in the Mediterranean diet group and 111 in the low-fat group (crude rate per 1000 person-years: 28·1 [95% CI 27·9-28·3] in the Mediterranean diet group vs 37·7 [37·5-37·9] in the low-fat group, log-rank p=0·039). Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios ...

Treatment patterns and use of healthcare resources of patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and hypercholesterolemia and patients with familial hypercholesterolemia in Spain: Protocol of the Reality study
This study aims to analyze the treatment patterns and use of healthcare resources of ASCVD and FH in Spain. The prevalence of these disorders will also be estimated. Due to the high morbidity and mortality associated with these diseases, it is expected that our study will provide useful information for healthcare systems and decision makers to improve the management of these disabling diseases.PMID:35990965 | PMC:PMC9386132 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2022.966049
