Croatian study on COVID-19-positive stroke patients during the second wave of the pandemic
CONCLUSION: Ischemic stroke after COVID-19 differs in etiology from ischemic stroke complicated by COVID-19 infection. Both patient groups are characterized by severe disability and high mortality. Raising the awareness of prehospital stroke and optimization of clinical workflow are important if we want to improve the stroke outcomes by acute recanalization techniques.PMID:36325667 | PMC:PMC9648083 | DOI:10.3325/cmj.2022.63.431

The effect of atorvastatin on the common carotid artery intima-media thickness in patients with ischemic stroke.
Authors: Khazaei M, Khosravi M, Mazaheri S, Mazdeh M, Ghiasian M, Taheri M, Ghafouri-Fard S Abstract Occlusion of the initial segment of internal carotid artery is the most common reason for vascular events in the brain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of one-year treatment with atorvastatin on intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid arteries as a measure of atherosclerosis in stroke patients. In this prospective interventional study, 44 patients with ischemic stroke were investigated. Patients were treated with atorvastatin 40 mg once a day for one year. IMT of carotid arteries was measured...

Predictors of early-onset depression after first-ever stroke.
PREDICTORS OF EARLY-ONSET DEPRESSION AFTER FIRST-EVER STROKE. Acta Clin Croat. 2020 Mar;59(1):81-90 Authors: Rabi-Žikić T, Živanović Ž, Đajić V, Simić S, Ružička-Kaloci S, Slankamenac S, Žikić M Abstract Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a severe and frequent stroke complication and one of the crucial factors for the outcome of rehabilitation and life quality after stroke. However, mood disorders frequently remain unnoticed and therefore untreated. The aim of the study was to examine all the potential risk factors and determine the independent predictors of early-onset depression after first-...

Role of platelet gene polymorphisms in ischemic pediatric stroke subtypes: a case-control study.
CONCLUSION: Individual HPAs, and particularly HPA haplotypes, are involved in IPS subtypes pathogenesis. A possible risk-inducing synergistic effect of SELP haplotypes with FV R506Q is restricted to PAIS only. PMID: 32118374 [PubMed - in process]

The Effect of Home Care for Stroke Patients and Education of Caregivers on the Caregiver Burden and Quality of Life.
This study results indicated that home care provided for stroke patients and education of caregivers decreased the caregiver burden and increased their quality of life. PMID: 31819329 [PubMed - in process]

Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells attenuate ischemic brain injuries in rats by modulating miR-21-3p/MAT2B signaling transduction.
CONCLUSION: This study confirmed the protective effect of ADMSCs against ischemic brain injury exerted by suppressing miR-21-3p level and up-regulating MAT2B level. PMID: 31686458 [PubMed - in process]

Anxiety in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke: Risk Factors and Effects on Functional Status
Conclusion: Depressive symptoms are the major correlates of PSA while more severe PSA is associated with poorer ADL and health-related QOL. Acute lesions involving CHWM may correlate with PSA in ischemic stroke patients with mild-to-moderate neurologic deficits, supporting a lesion-location hypothesis in PSA.IntroductionAnxiety is prevalent after stroke and occurs in about one-quarter of stroke survivors (1, 2). Poststroke anxiety (PSA) may have a negative impact on quality of life (QOL) of stroke survivors, affecting their rehabilitation (3). Furthermore, one prospective study found that severe anxiety symptoms were assoc...

The Impact of Comorbidity on Rehabilitation Outcome after Ischemic Stroke.
Authors: Simić-Panić D, Bošković K, Milićević M, Rabi Žikić T, Cvjetković Bošnjak M, Tomašević-Todorović S, Jovićević M Abstract Comorbidity decreases survival but it still remains unknown to what extent functional recovery after ischemic stroke is affected. The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence of the most common comorbidities in patients with ischemic stroke and to examine their predictive value on the functional status and recovery. In order to obtain relevant information for this research, we conducted a prospective study over a two-year period. It included patients with acute/...

Distribution of Stroke Risk Factors in Eastern Croatia.
Authors: Rostohar Bijelić B, Petek M, Kadojić M, Bijelić N, Kadojić D Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of risk factors according to age, gender, subtypes and recurrence of stroke in eastern Croatia. The study included 250 acute stroke patients admitted to University Department of Neurology, Osijek University Hospital Centre in 2011. Patients were grouped according to age, gender, subtypes and recurrence of stroke. The study showed significant differences in the distribution of cigarette smoking, diabetes, cardiomyopathy and hyperuricemia according to patient age. According to gen...

Evaluation of the Head Multislice Computed Tomography Scan in Emergency Department.
Authors: Zadravec D, Gregurić T, Smoljan M, Mustapić M, Miličić G, Jović A, Rubil D, Tomasović D, Bašić Kes V Abstract The aim of the study was to examine the prevalence of head injuries, acute stroke and brain tumors obtained from computed tomography (CT) scans in the emergency department (ED) during a one-year period. We also assessed the potential effect of seasons on the occurrence of stroke, head trauma and tumors found on CT scans, expressed in monthly intervals. This retrospective review included all patients that underwent emergency head CT from the hospital database. A total of 3888 head CT examina...

Comparison of RISK-PCI, GRACE, TIMI risk scores for prediction of major adverse cardiac events in patients with acute coronary syndrome.
CONCLUSIONS: In comparison with the GRACE and TIMI scores, RISK-PCI score showed a non-inferior ability to predict 30-day MACE and death in ACS patients. Moreover, RISK-PCI was the only scoring system that could predict recurrent ischemia requiring TVR. PMID: 29308832 [PubMed - in process]

Serum neuron-specific enolase as a marker of brain ischemia-reperfusion injury in patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy.
SERUM NEURON-SPECIFIC ENOLASE AS A MARKER OF BRAIN ISCHEMIA-REPERFUSION INJURY IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING CAROTID ENDARTERECTOMY. Acta Clin Croat. 2016 12;55(4):579-84 Authors: Iłżecki M, Iłżecka J, Przywara S, Terlecki P, Grabarska A, Stepulak A, Zubilewicz T Abstract In patients with atherosclerotic stenosis of the extracranial segment of internal carotid artery, surgical intervention is an effective method to prevent cerebral ischemic stroke. However, this surgical procedure may cause vascular brain damage. The aim of the study was to investigate consequential brain ischemia-reperfusion injury by me...

Rasch validation and comparison of Slovenian, Croatian, and Italian versions of the Mini-BESTest in patients with subacute stroke
We aimed to verify by Rasch analysis whether the Mini-BESTest, a balance measure, confirms its main psychometric properties in patients with subacute stroke undergoing rehabilitation in three different countries (Slovenia, Croatia, and Italy), and to examine the stability of item hierarchy and difficulty across the three national versions through a differential item functioning analysis. We investigated 159 patients with subacute stroke consecutively admitted to three rehabilitation facilities after screening for an intensive, tailored rehabilitation program. Balance function was tested within 36 h from admission and aft...
