Multimorbidities Are Associated to Lower Survival in Ischaemic Stroke: Results from a Brazilian Stroke Cohort (EMMA Study)
Conclusions: A high burden of comorbidities represented an independent predictor of poor prognosis increasing the risk of dying by 2 to 3 times among IS up to 9 years in the EMMA study. The inclusion of other CVRF such as AF and stroke recurrence slightly modified all-cause mortality risk.Cerebrovasc Dis 2017;44:232-239

Burnout syndrome: are stroke neurologists at a higher risk?
Conclusion: Burnout is prevalent among the neurologists of Paraná, c orroborating the results previously reported in other studies. There seems to be no significant difference between those neurologists who work in the emergency stroke care setting compared with those who don't.RESUMO Introdu ção: A síndrome de burnout é uma resposta psicológica relacionada à profissão, caracterizada por exaustão emocional, despersonalização e redução da realização pessoal. Objetivos: Objetivamos avaliar a prevalência da síndrome de burnout em neurologistas do Paraná, distribuindo a atu ação entre neurologistas vascular...

Priorities to reduce the burden of stroke in Latin American countries
Discussions were focused on the regional and country-specific activities associated with stroke prevention and treatment, including public stroke awareness, prevention strategies, delivery and organisation of care, clinical practice gaps, and unmet needs. The meeting culminated with the adoption of the special Gramado Declaration, signed by all Ministerial officials who attended the meeting. With agreed priorities for stroke prevention, treatment, and research, an opportunity now exists to translate this Declaration into an action plan to reduce the burden of stroke.

Dysphagia and Associated Pneumonia in Stroke Patients from Brazil: A Systematic Review
AbstractDysphagia and its associated complications are expected to be relatively more frequent in stroke patients in Brazil than in similar patients treated in developed countries due to the suboptimal stroke care in many Brazilians medical services. However, there is no estimate of dysphagia and pneumonia incidence for the overall stroke population in Brazil. We conducted a systematic review of the recent literature to address this knowledge gap, first screening citations for relevance and then rating full articles of accepted citations. At both levels, judgements were made by two independent raters according to a priori ...

Predictors of return to work after stroke: a prospective, observational cohort study with 6  months follow-up.
Conclusions: Less than 50% of stroke survivors returned to work six months after stroke. Among predictors, only the level of dependence in daily activities is a modifiable factor. Interventions aimed at reducing disability after stroke might increase rates of return to work. Implications for rehabilitation In Brazil, less than 50% of stroke survivors returned to work six months after stroke. Clinicians may collect information regarding household income, type of work and dependence in daily activities to estimate chances of returning to work, in developing countries. Being independent at 3 months was the strongest predictor...

Measurement properties of the Reaching Performance Scale for Stroke.
Conclusions: Reaching Performance Scale for Stroke showed excellent reliability and redundant internal consistency. The construct validity with the Fugl-Meyer scale was strong. Reaching Performance Scale for Stroke was able to discriminate individuals with different levels of upper limb impairment. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION Post-stroke individuals develop compensatory strategies to perform reaching movements with the paretic upper limb. The Reaching Performance Scale for Stroke provides a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the reach-to-grasp movement. The Reaching Performance Scale for Stroke is suitable for ...

Effects of statin therapy on outcomes of ischemic stroke: a real-world experience in Brazil
Conclusions: Statins play an important role in the treatment of ischemic stroke, preventing stroke recurrence and cardiovascular events, and improving functional performance.RESUMO Introdu ção: A terapia com estatinas tornou-se um dos avanços mais importantes na prevenção secundária do acidente vascular cerebral (AVC). Objetivo: Fornecer evidências de dados do mundo real para avaliar associações detalhadas entre a prevenção secundária do AVC e o uso de estatinas no Bras il. Stroke Hospital Admissions during the COVID-19 Outbreak in S ão Paulo, Brazil
Conclusion: We argue for policies aimed at improving stroke care and developing awareness campaigns regarding the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, as even in less severe presentations, stroke can trigger an increase in mortality, cost, and long-term disability.Cerebrovasc Dis

Hospital Length of Stay and 30-Day Mortality Prediction in Stroke: A Machine Learning Analysis of 17,000 ICU Admissions in Brazil
ConclusionsHospital length of stay and 30-day mortality of patients admitted to the ICU with stroke were accurately predicted through machine learning methods, even in the absence of stroke-specific data, such as the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score or neuroimaging findings. The proposed methods using general intensive care databases may be used for resource use allocation planning and performance assessment of ICUs treating stroke. More detailed acute neurological and management data, as well as long-term functional outcomes, may improve the accuracy and applicability of future machine-learning-based prediction algorithms.

Awareness towards stroke among high school students in Brazil: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: There was a knowledge deficit with regard to recognizing stroke and activating the emergency medical services. The findings apply to the sample investigated and suggest that there is a need for stroke educational interventions, starting in high school.PMID:35508010 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2021.0659.R2.13102021
