Functional outcomes among stroke patients in Alagoas, Brazil: observational study
CONCLUSION: We found a FD rate four times greater than in another Brazilian study. Lower stroke severity and fewer depressive symptoms were associated with achieving functional independence. Less than half of the patients were referred to a rehabilitation service at hospital discharge and few had access to multidisciplinary treatment.PMID:33729419 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2020.0304.R2.10122020

Modeling functional network topology following stroke through graph theory: functional reorganization and motor recovery prediction
Braz J Med Biol Res. 2022 Aug 15;55:e12036. doi: 10.1590/1414-431X2022e12036. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTThe study of functional reorganization following stroke has been steadily growing supported by advances in neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Concomitantly, graph theory has been increasingly employed in neuroscience to model the brain's functional connectivity (FC) and to investigate it in a variety of contexts. The aims of this study were: 1) to investigate the reorganization of network topology in the ipsilesional (IL) and contralesional (CL) hemispheres of stroke patients wi...

Medical perception of stroke care conditions in Brazil
Conclusions Care conditions are worse in the public sector with regard to both infrastructure and human resources. Future public health policies for the prevention and treatment of stroke should be formulated, taking into consideration neurologists ’ perceptions.RESUMO O acidente vascular cerebral é atualmente a segunda causa de morte no Brasil.

Prevalence of obesity among stroke patients in five Brazilian cities: a cross-sectional study
Conclusions The number of overweight patients with incident stroke is higher than the number of patients with stroke and normal BMI.

Behavior of stroke volume variation in hemodynamic stable patients during thoracic surgery with one-lung ventilation periods
ConclusionThe decrease of stroke volume variation values during one-lung ventilation with protective ventilatory strategies advices not to use the same threshold values to determine fluid responsiveness.

Post-stroke depression and cognitive impairment: study design and preliminary findings in a Brazilian prospective stroke cohort (EMMA study)
Stroke, as well as, dementia and depression are conditions associated with high burden of disability (Feigin et al., 2017). Particularly after a stroke, depressive, symptoms and cognitive impairment are very often conditions (Almeida et al., 2007; Mirza et al., 2016; Tatemichi et al., 1994), that either separately or concomitantly, might affect stroke survivors interfering in their short and even long-term recovery (Kauhanen et al., 1999; Parikh et al., 1987; Robinson et al., 1984). PSD occurs in around one-third of stroke patients.

Embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) cohort of Brazilian patients in a university hospital
ABSTRACT Embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) is an important group of cryptogenic strokes that are in evidence due recent ongoing trials. We reviewed medical records at discharge from the stroke unit of all patients who met ESUS criteria and attended our institution between February 2016 and July 2017. Among 550 stroke patients, 51 had ESUS. We found that hypertension (60%), diabetes mellitus (34%), and smoking (36%) were the most prevalent risk factors. The mean National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores were 7 at admission and 4 at discharge, while median scores on the modified Rankin scale were 0...
