The role of lung ultrasound for detecting atelectasis, consolidation, and/or pneumonia in the adult cardiac surgery population: A scoping review of the literature
Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) frequently occur after cardiac surgery and may lead to adverse patient outcomes. Traditional diagnostic tools such as auscultation or chest x-ray have inferior diagnostic accuracy compared to the gold standard (chest computed tomography). Lung ultrasound (LUS) is an emerging area of research combating these issues. However, no review has employed a formal search strategy to examine the role of LUS in identifying the specific PPCs of atelectasis, consolidation, and/or pneumonia  or investigated the ability of LUS to predict these complications in this cohort.

A retrospective observational study examining interhospital transfers from six New Zealand rural hospitals in 2019
CONCLUSIONS: Most patients that are transferred to urban hospitals receive an intervention or investigation that was not available at the rural hospital.PMID:37491762 | DOI:10.1111/ajr.13024

Upper airway morphology in adults with positional obstructive sleep apnea
CONCLUSION: Adults with POSA and adults with NPOSA have similar anatomical balance and shape of their upper airway in the supine position.TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ANZCTR Trial ACTRN12611000409976).PMID:37466758 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-023-02879-0

Protocol: Can coronary artery calcium score identified on thoracic planning CT scans be used and actioned to identify cancer survivors at high risk of cardiac events: A feasibility study in cancer survivors undergoing radiotherapy in Australia
BMJ Open. 2023 Jul 18;13(7):e072376. doi: 10.1136/bmjopen-2023-072376.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: A coronary artery calcium (CAC) CT scan can identify calcified plaque and predict risk of future cardiac events. Cancer survivors undergoing thoracic radiotherapy routinely undergo a planning CT scan, which presents a unique opportunity to use already obtained medical imaging to identify those at the highest risk of cardiac events. While radiation therapy is an important modality for many cancer treatments, radiation dose to the heart in thoracic radiotherapy leads to cardiotoxicity and may accelerate pre-existing atherosclerosis. Clinical outcomes and health care costs of transferring rural Western Australians for invasive coronary angiography, and a cost-effective alternative care model: a retrospective cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Many rural and remote Western Australians transferred for ICA in Perth have non-obstructive CAD and are medically managed. Providing CTCA as a first line investigation in rural centres could avert half of these transfers and be a cost-effective strategy for risk stratification of people with suspected CAD.PMID:37403443 | DOI:10.5694/mja2.52018

Coronary embolism due to probable clinical bioprosthetic aortic valve thrombosis: a case report
CONCLUSION: We experienced a case of coronary embolism in a patient with probable BPVT. Reversible bioprosthetic valve hemodynamic deterioration after anticoagulation strongly supports the diagnosis in the absence of histopathology. Early moderate-to-severe hemodynamic valve deterioration warrants further investigations, including cardiac computed tomography and sequential echocardiography, to investigate for probable BPVT and consideration of timely anticoagulation initiation to prevent thromboembolic events.PMID:37365533 | DOI:10.1186/s12872-023-03359-9

Challenges in managing upper gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to primary squamous cell carcinoma of the pancreas: a case report and literature review
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first reported Australian case of pancreatic SCC presenting with upper gastrointestinal bleeding and new-onset diabetes mellitus. Patients with unresectable disease require a multidisciplinary approach to manage complications and improve symptom control. However, there are no standard treatment guidelines and future research is needed in this regard.PMID:37171715 | DOI:10.1186/s40792-023-01663-2

Computed tomography Coronary angiography in rural referral hospitals: A single-Centre experience
CONCLUSIONS: CTCA is a safe and efficacious imaging modality for low- to moderate-risk chest pain patients. There was acceptable diagnostic accuracy and the investigation was safe.PMID:37078575 | DOI:10.1111/ajr.12987
