Overdose and suicide are different phenomena among opioid users that require different clinical management
Aust N Z J Psychiatry. 2023 Mar 5:48674231159298. doi: 10.1177/00048674231159298. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGiven the high rates of mental health comorbidity among opioid users, and increasing rates of opioid prescription for chronic pain, psychiatrists and mental health clinicians are likely to treat patients who are dependent on opioids. Among such patients, many will have histories of opioid overdose or suicide attempts. Effectiveness of Oxycodone Hydrochloride vs. Combination Acetaminophen and Codeine for Subacute Pain After Fractures Managed Surgically: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Clinical question: Do less potent opioids suffice for adequate pain control for patients with surgically managed fractures? Background: For post-surgical pain management at time of discharge, hospitalists try to balance the analgesic effects of opioid therapy with the risks of dependency and overdose. Data on optimal discharge opioid dosing for adult patients who have undergone surgical management of fracture are currently limited. Study design: Double-blind, randomized controlled trial Setting: Trauma hospital in Sydney, Australia Synopsis: Adult patients who had sustained non-pathological fractures of a long bone (e.g., ...

Factors associated with long-term functional and psychosocial outcomes in patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma

by Nikki McCaffrey, Seong Leang Cheah, Tim Luckett, Jane L. Phillips, Meera Agar, Patricia M. Davidson, Frances Boyle, Tim Shaw, David C. Currow, Melanie Lovell BackgroundAbout 70% of patients with advanced cancer experience pain. Few studies have investigated the use of healthcare in this population and the relationship between pain intensity and costs. MethodsAdults with advanced cancer and scored worst pain ≥ 2/10 on a numeric rating scale (NRS) were recruited from 6 Australian oncology/palliative care outpatient services to the Stop Cancer PAIN trial (08/15-06/19). Out-of-hospital, publicly funded services, prescript...

Assessing pain using facial recognition software among Aboriginal aged care residents with cognitive impairment: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: We found under-reporting of observed pain signs and behaviours for Aboriginal aged care residents by assessors. Further training in the assessment of pain in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander aged care residents may be necessary and a continuing shift in clinical practice to using technology and point-of-care assessment.PMID:36847297 | DOI:10.1111/ajag.13170
