Salt-Tolerant Antifungal and Antibacterial Activities of the Corn Defensin ZmD32
We examined whether the high charge on ZmD32 would allow this defensin to retain activity in media with elevated salt concentrations. ZmD32 inhibited C. albicans, C. auris, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, and C. tropicalis growth with IC50 values ranging from 0.7 to 3.0 in ½ PDB medium containing 100 mM NaCl. In contrast, NaD1 was only active against C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis with IC50 values of 3.4 and 1.3 μM, respectively, in medium with added NaCl. ZmD32 also retained activity against E. coli when NaC1 concentrations were raised to 100 mM while NaD1 did not (Table 1). For C. albicans and C...

Diagnosis, Phenotype, and Molecular Genetics of Congenital Analbuminemia
Conclusion Figure 4 shows that the 27 different molecular defects within the ALB so far reported to cause CAA are located in ten different exons (1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12) and in seven different introns (1, 2, 3, 6, 10, 11, and 12) (The Albumin Website, 2018; Caridi et al., 2019). Variations in the last two coding exons (13 and 14) would probably cause the presence of a circulating C-terminal variant of the protein and not CAA. The first twelve exons of ALB, with the exception of the two shortest, exons 2 and 6, were reported to contain at least one molecular defect resulting in CAA (The Albumin Website, 2018; ...

Associations of Anemia With Outcomes in Patients With Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Anemia on admission was associated with higher mortality and an increased risk of poor outcome in patients with ICH. However, the results were limited by the high heterogeneity of included studies. Prospective, multi-center or population-based, large sample cohort studies are needed in the future. Introduction Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is the second most common cause of stroke and a highly lethal disease (1), which still lacks effective therapeutic interventions (2, 3). Although age, baseline ICH volume and neurological status on admission are well-known predictors of outcome of ICH (4), none of t...

Evaluating the health literacy demand and cultural appropriateness of online immunisation information available to refugee and migrant communities in Australia.
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that there are currently not many refugee-specific resources on immunisation. Future work needs to better improve the health literacy demand of online immunisation information. Engaging with members from migrant communities is also recommended so that appropriately tailored resources are co-developed. PMID: 32800630 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Evaluation of the quality of information on the internet about 2019 coronavirus outbreak in relation to orthodontics
This study aims to evaluate the content of information in three different search engines in terms of orthodontics as the source of information at the current stage of the COVID-19 outbreak. An internet search was conducted on April 10th, 2020, using the most popular search engines: GoogleTM, BingTM, and Yahoo! ® with the keyword “coronavirus orthodontics”. Top 10 websites were evaluated for each search engine. After excluding duplicates the remaining 23 sites were saved in Microsoft Excel programme and evaluated by two independent researchers (HKO and RSO; both experienced orthodontists) using the mo dified DISCERN too...

A Google Trends ™ Analysis of Bladder Cancer: Determining Awareness Campaign Success, and Patients' Needs in Clinical Management
CONCLUSION: People use the internet intensively to search for information about bladder cancer. We think that several types of web-based applications such as "Google Trends" can help determine the behavioural patterns and tendencies of bladder cancer patients and affect the clinical decision-making processes, as well as readily determining the impact of cancer awareness campaigns to bring about an increased awareness in the society for the recognition of the importance of an early diagnosis.PMID:34710986 | DOI:10.31557/APJCP.2021.22.10.3115
