COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination, and Human Herpesviruses Infections
Vaccines (Basel). 2023 Jan 20;11(2):232. doi: 10.3390/vaccines11020232.ABSTRACTThere are several human herpesviruses. A common characteristic of infection by these viruses is latency, by which the virus assumes a non-replicative state, subverting the attentions of the host's immune response. In immunocompetent hosts, herpesviruses are immunologically controlled, although periodic virus shedding can occur. In situations where immunological control is lost, herpesviruses can reactivate and produce clinically apparent disease. It is now becoming apparent that COVID-19 or exposure to COVID-19 vaccines can exert several effects...

Recombinant zoster vaccine coverage in the United States: An analysis of claims-based data
This study quantifies RZV coverage and assesses predictors for RZV vaccination using a U.S. claims database. Univariate linear regression provided annual prevalence of RZV vaccination and multivariable logistic regression provided ORs and 95% CIs for associations between predictors and RZV vaccination. A total of 4,124,315 individuals (19,080,914 person-years) were included in this study. Since receiving FDA approval for the prevention of HZ, RZV coverage (of at least one dose) has reached approximately 17% within the eligible U.S. population by January 2021, although significant disparities between demographic groups were...

Herpesviruses reactivation following COVID-19 vaccination: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our study showed the possible association between COVID-19 vaccination and herpesvirus reactivation. The evidence for VZV and HSV was supported by observational studies. However, regarding other herpesviruses (EBV and CMV), further research especially from observational studies and clinical trials is required to elucidate the interaction between COVID-19 vaccination and their reactivation.PMID:37559096 | DOI:10.1186/s40001-023-01238-9

Worldwide Evolution of Vaccinable and Nonvaccinable Viral Skin Infections: Google Trends Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Harnessing data generated by web searches may increase the efficacy of traditional surveillance systems and strengthens the suspicion that the incidence of some vaccinable viral skin infections such as varicella, measles, and rubella may be globally increasing, whereas the incidence of common nonvaccinable skin infections remains stable.PMID:37632891 | DOI:10.2196/35034

Improvement in Herpes Zoster Vaccination in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Quality Improvement Project.
CONCLUSION: Electronic identification of vaccine eligibility and BPA significantly improved HZ vaccination rates. The process required minimal modification of clinic work flow and did not burden the physician's time, and has the potential for self-sustainability and generalizability. Adult Vaccination as a Protective Factor for Dementia: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review of Population-Based Observational Studies
CONCLUSION: Routine adult vaccinations are associated with a significant reduction in dementia risk and may be an effective strategy for dementia prevention. Further research is needed to elucidate the causal effects of this association and the underlying mechanisms.PMID:35592323 | PMC:PMC9110786 | DOI:10.3389/fimmu.2022.872542

Seropositive Neuromyelitis Optica in a Case of Undiagnosed Ankylosing Spondylitis: A Neuro-Rheumatological Conundrum
In this study, a 35-year-old Indian man with an undiagnosed progressive axial spondyloarthropathy (i.e., AS) is reported presenting with acute-onset longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis, a clinical subset of NMOSD. Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), a primary demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system (CNS), is an autoimmune astrocytopathy against foot processes of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channels, which manifests with optic neuritis, longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM), area-postrema syndrome, brainstem syndrome diencephalic syndrome, and cerebral syndrome.1-4 Ankylosing spo...

Varicella-Zoster virus reactivation following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2  vaccination or infection: New insights
CONCLUSION: This study indicates that the occurrence of VZV reactivation is clinically relevant. However, our findings suggest that COVID-19 vaccination is safe, and remains strongly recommended.PMID:35931613 | PMC:PMC9340059 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2022.07.022
