Measuring the Effects of Education in Detecting Lung Cancer on Chest Radiographs: Utilization of a New Assessment Tool
This study was designed to evaluate the effect of group and individualized educational lectures to accurately interpret chest radiographs of lung cancer patients and to introduce a new educational tool in evaluating skills for reading chest radiographs. Utilizing “hotspot” technology will be instrumental in measuring the effect of education in interpreting chest radiographs. There were 48 participants in the study. Chest radiographs of 100 lung cancer patients and 11 healthy patients taken at various time points were used for evaluation. Using “hotspot ” technology, lesions on each radiograph were outlined. Values ...

Dosimetric verification and quality assurance of running-start-stop (RSS) delivery in tomotherapy
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dosimetric profiles and delivery accuracy of running-start-stop (RSS) delivery in tomotherapy and to present initial quality assurance (QA) results on the accuracy of the dynamic jaw motion, dosimetric penumbrae of the RSS dynamic jaw and the static jaw were measured by radiographic films. Delivery accuracy of the RSS was evaluated by gamma analysis on film measurements of 12 phantom plans. Consistency in the performance of RSS was evaluated by QA procedures over the first nine months after the installation of the feature. These QA were devised to check: 1) positional accuracy ...

A Different Field for Physicists: First experience of pitchside radiological medical physics support
Player wellbeing and fitness is a priority of top national and international sporting teams. Recognising this, the FAI and IRFU planned that the Aviva stadium become the first Irish stadium to house a radiographic unit as part of its medical facilities. Medical physics and radiologists were involved in the design of the facility from the start. Considerations in the design and specification of the radiographic unit were different from traditional medical facilities. These included the intermittent use, the requirement for on the spot diagnosis, ability to give referring team physicians images immediately, robust environme...

I063 Safety and quality in the medical imaging department
Quality and safety of treatment of patients in the medical imaging department depend on cooperation between several professionals. First there is the medical doctor who is specialized in (interventional) radiology and/or nuclear medicine. This medical specialist is responsible for the medical treatment of the patients i.e. acceptance of the patient, the medical treatment and the report of the findings. Second, there is the radiographer who is responsible for the well-being of the patient, the technical actions during the treatment and the after-care.

Changes in medical costs for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis over the past 15 years
Nagoya J Med Sci. 2023 May;85(2):333-342. doi: 10.18999/nagjms.85.2.333.ABSTRACTUse of instrumentation has become widespread in spinal surgery due to intraoperative spinal cord monitoring, navigation, and improvement and development of implant materials. However, recent advances in spine surgery may have also led to an increase in medical costs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the trends of operative resource utilization and the costs of surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) over 15 years. Surgery for AIS was performed for 118 patients from January 2004 to December 2019 at national University Hospit...
