A Teaching Program for the “Culture of Safety in Cholecystectomy” and Avoidance of Bile Duct Injury
Since its inception, laparoscopic cholecystectomy has been associated with an increased incidence of bile duct injury. Bile duct injury is a seriously morbid iatrogenic condition. Reliable incidence data in the USA are lacking but there is no doubt that it is a continuing problem. A recent study from Sweden, a county with a modern health care system, places the incidence at 1.5%, which is disturbingly high.

Laparoscopic fundoplication surgery versus medical management for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) in adults.
CONCLUSIONS: There is considerable uncertainty in the balance of benefits versus harms of laparoscopic fundoplication compared to long-term medical treatment with proton pump inhibitors. Further RCTs of laparoscopic fundoplication versus medical management in patients with GORD should be conducted with outcome-assessor blinding and should include all participants in the analysis. Such trials should include long-term patient-orientated outcomes such as treatment-related adverse events (including severity), quality of life, and also report on the social and economic impact of the adverse events and symptoms. Formal Nutritional Education Improves Weight Loss in Bariatric Patients Following Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
ConclusionsThe addition of formal nutritional education can enhance weight loss following bariatric surgery. We have shown a significant improvement in weight loss results following LSG with the implementation of formal nutritional education; this is the only study to our knowledge evaluating formal nutritional education and LSG.

New possibilities in practical education of surgery.
Abstract The fast spread of laparoscopic surgery in the surgical community also required introduction of new methods of surgical education of these techniques. Training boxes applied for this reason meant a considerable help. The technique of the virtual reality introduced simulation, which is a new possibility in education. For the first time in the history of surgery we can measure medical students' or residents' dexterity and one can get acquainted with a surgical procedure in the form of "serious games". By application of the up-to-date imaging methods we can plan the movements of the surgeon's hand even befor...

Robotic stone surgery – Current state and future prospects: A systematic review
Conclusions The benefits of robotic devices in stone surgery in existing endourological, laparoscopic, and open treatment strategies still need elucidation. Although recent data are promising, more prospective randomised controlled studies are necessary to clarify the impact of this technique on patient safety and stone-free rates.

How Do Thresholds of Principle and Preference Influence Surgeon Assessments of Learner Performance?
Conclusions: The findings of the present study provide the first empirical evidence to suggest that surgeons’ attitudes toward their own procedural variations may be an important influence on the subjectivity of intraoperative assessment in surgical education. Assessment based on intraoperative entrustment may harness such subjectivity for the purpose of implementing competency-based surgical education.

The effects of preoperative pain education on the decision to discharge patients following single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy.
Authors: Seo JW, Kim MJ, Yoon SH, Paik KY, Park SM, Kang WK, Lee D, Lee CS Abstract Purpose: Few studies have analyzed the effects of preoperative pain education on the postoperative decision to discharge. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of pain education and management on the decision to discharge patients after single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy (SILA). Methods: We included 135 patients who had undergone SILA for acute appendicitis between March 2017 and April 2018 in a single medical center. Of these, 72 (53.3%) patients had received preoperative pain education (group I) and 63 ...

Prioritizing Surgical Services during on-Going Pandemic Response: Modification and Reliability of the Medically Necessary Time Sensitive Surgery (MeNTS) Scoring Tool
We describe our modified-Delphi approach to adapt the MeNTS tool in a structured fashion and its application to gynecologic surgical services. Blinded reviewers engaged in a three-round iterative adaptation and final scoring utilizing the modified tool. The cohort consisted of 392 female consecutive gynecology patients across three Los Angeles County Hospitals awaiting scheduled procedures in the surgical queue. The majority of patients were Latina (74.7%) and premenopa usal (67.1%). Over half (52.4%) of the patients had cardiovascular disease, while 13.0% had lung disease, and 13.8% had diabetes. The most common indication...

Development, manufacture and initial assessment of validity of a 3-dimensional-printed bowel anastomosis simulation training model
CONCLUSION: Experts found the 3D-printed bowel anastomosis simulator to be an appropriate tool for the education of surgical residents, based on the model's texture, appearance and ability to undergo an anastomosis. This model provides an affordable way for surgical residents to learn bowel anastomosis. Future research will focus on proving educational efficacy, effectiveness and transfer that can be adapted for laparoscopic anastomosis training, hand-sewing and stapling procedures.PMID:34580077 | DOI:10.1503/cjs.018719
