Examples of Outcome Reporting Bias in Vaccine Studies: Illustrating How Perpetuating Medical Consensus Can Impede Progress in Public Health
CONCLUSIONS: Conflicts of interest (e.g., financial) that abound between health regulatory agencies and the pharmaceutical industry impact what is ultimately reckoned as medical consensus. Outcome reporting bias that is inherent to all researchers to some degree, obscures medical and scientific truth. Advancement of public health requires that researchers have integrity and an openness and willingness to collaborate to resolve contradictory findings. In fact, it is usually through meticulous, rigorous, scientific investigation of contradictory findings that medical science has advanced and contributed to improvements in pu...

Exploring the purine core of 3'-C-ethynyladenosine (EAdo) in search of novel nucleoside therapeutics.
Abstract A series of new nucleoside analogues based on a C-3 branched ethynyl sugar derivative as present in 3'-C-ethynylcytidine (ECyd) and -adenosine (EAdo), combined with modified purine bases was synthetized and evaluated against a broad array of viruses and tumour cell lines. The pronounced cytostatic activity of EAdo was confirmed. EAdo and its 2,6-diaminopurine analogue showed inhibitory activity against vaccinia virus (EC50: 0.31 and 51μM, respectively). Derivative 10 on the other hand was found active against varicella zoster virus (EC50: 4.68μM). PMID: 26965865 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of Education and Information on Vaccination Behavior in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Background: Despite the existence of international guidelines, vaccination in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has not been integrated optimally. We developed a thorough education program, and compared its influence on vaccination rates with routine clinical practice in a tertiary IBD center. Methods: Between December 2014 and March 2015, we included 505 consecutive patients with IBD visiting our outpatient clinic (53% men, 72% Crohn's disease, median age 44 years). Vaccination data, including hepatitis B, influenza, pneumococcus, tetanus, and varicella zoster virus, as well as demographic data, were collect...

Immunization education for internal medicine residents: A cluster-randomized controlled trial.
CONCLUSIONS: Fact-based immunization education was useful in improving IM resident immunization rates for influenza and pertussis. The PCSDM immunization curriculum did not lead to increases in immunization rates compared with the fact-based curriculum, but it did significantly increase resident confidence in communicating with patients about vaccines. Factors influencing series completion rates of recombinant herpes zoster vaccine in the United States: A retrospective pharmacy and medical claims analysis
CONCLUSION: Pharmacists contribute substantially to the overall high RZV completion rates in the United States. However, completion rates can be improved, especially in people receiving their first RZV dose at a physician's office. Future strategies should aim at lowering barriers to completing vaccination series in African Americans, Medicaid beneficiaries, and people with comorbidities.PMID:34893442 | DOI:10.1016/j.japh.2021.11.010

Direct Medical Costs of Four Vaccine-Preventable Infectious Diseases in Older Adults in Spain
CONCLUSION: The direct economic burden of herpes zoster, pneumococcal disease, influenza and pertussis in adults 45 years and older was high in Spain, and may be underestimated as it only considered medical assistance and not other applicable direct or indirect costs. Increasing vaccination rates in adults may potentially reduce the economic burden derived from these diseases, although future cost-effectiveness analysis including other disease-related costs, vaccination costs and vaccination effectiveness would be needed.PMID:35254649 | PMC:PMC8899779 | DOI:10.1007/s41669-022-00329-3

Management of herpesvirus reactivations in patients with solid tumours and hematologic malignancies: update of the Guidelines of the Infectious Diseases Working Party (AGIHO) of the German Society for Hematology and Medical Oncology (DGHO) on herpes simplex virus type 1, herpes simplex virus type 2, and varicella zoster virus
Ann Hematol. 2022 Jan 7. doi: 10.1007/s00277-021-04746-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTClinical reactivations of herpes simplex virus or varicella zoster virus occur frequently among patients with malignancies and manifest particularly as herpes simplex stomatitis in patients with acute leukaemia treated with intensive chemotherapy and as herpes zoster in patients with lymphoma or multiple myeloma. In recent years, knowledge on reactivation rates and clinical manifestations has increased for conventional chemotherapeutics as well as for many new antineoplastic agents. This guideline summarizes current evidence on herpesvi...

Costs of adult vaccination in medical settings and pharmacies: an observational study.
CONCLUSIONS: The average direct costs paid per adult vaccination were lower in pharmacies compared with physician offices and other medical settings by 16%-26% and 11%-20%, respectively. These results were mostly consistent across geographic regions and types of health plans. These data may help payers and policymakers understand the economic value of adult vaccination in different settings, especially in pharmacies. PMID: 25166292 [PubMed - in process]

Impact of medical and/or pharmacy reimbursement on adult vaccination rates.
CONCLUSIONS:  Among members with commercial health insurance, HZV and PV rates were significantly higher among those whose insurance covered vaccinations under both medical and pharmacy benefits, compared with members whose insurance covered vaccines under the medical benefit only. Pharmacy-based vaccination coverage from commercial health insurance plans may help improve adult vaccination rates. PMID: 30020746 [PubMed - in process]

Dermatomal rash after Shingrix vaccination: cause or coincidence?
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2022 May 9;35(5):686-687. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2022.2071118. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTDermatological reactions have been reported following Shingrix vaccine administration in previous published cases, but dermatomal rash after Shingrix vaccination has not been reported in the United States. This case describes a 73-year-old immunocompetent woman with a dermatomal rash after Shingrix recombinant vaccine administration. This case highlights the rare possibility of an acute reaction after Shingrix vaccine administration, which should be recognized. Nonetheless, the vaccine has been shown to be very...
